This History of British Rock is the most exhaustive and essential overview of '60s British pop/rock available. Although the collection doesn't include tracks from the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Who, Herman's Hermits, the Dave Clark Five, and the early Animals, their absence doesn't hurt the series, since it spotlights several artists who never had more than a handful of hits, plus many forgotten gems. And there are plenty of major acts here, as well: The Kinks, the Small Faces, the Yardbirds, Donovan, the Hollies, the Zombies, the Spencer Davis Group, the Searchers, Manfred Mann, and Them are all represented by their best-known tracks. The collection runs from the beginnings of Merseybeat to the aftermath of psychedelia, meaning that it chronicles the evolution of British pop/rock quite effectively. But The History of British Rock shouldn't be thought of as simply an educational overview of one of the most vital eras of pop; each volume is fun and exciting, and sounds more like a good time than a history lesson. The series is one of the cornerstones of any comprehensive pop/rock collection. (Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide)

The Appletree Theatre was a studio group of American musicians who released the album Playback in 1967. The project was set up by brothers Terry and John Boylan, with leading jazz session musicians including Larry Coryell and Eric Gale. The album was essentially a loosely-woven concept album, comprising a collage of interlaced vocal narratives, sound effects, song fragments, and quality pop songs such as "Hightower Square" and "I Wonder If Louise Is Home". It was issued on the Verve Forecast label, and was finally reissued on CD in 2007. John Lennon referred to it as one of his favourite albums. In the wake of the set's commercial failure Terry went solo, releasing three albums as a singer/songwriter, while John reappeared as a member of the short-lived Hamilton Streetcar before turning his attention to production with the Eagles, Linda Ronstadt, and others.

Recorded live at San Francisco's The Matrix in May 1967 while they were still called The Sparrow, a Canadian Sixties blues-rock band, evolved out of Jack London & The Sparrows and later morphed into Steppenwolf. This is some powerful, bluesy garage rock. Early versions of some songs later done as Steppenwolf (Power Play, Tighten Up Your Wig, Corinna, Corinna and The Pusher), and a couple covers of songs by John Lee Hooker & Howlin' Wolf. Great sound quality for a 1967 live recording. The version of The Pusher on this is 21 minutes long. About half of that though is an extended psychedelic improvisation.

01 - Power Play
02 - Howlin' For My Darlin'
03 - I'm Goin' Upstairs
04 - Corina, Corina
05 - Tighten Up Your Wig

Spooky Tooth are an English progressive rock band principally active, with intermittent breakups, between 1967 to 1974. In recent years, the band has been reconstituted at various points, and continues to perform occasionally. Crucial to their sound was their instrumentation; they were one of the few acts within the rock forum of the time to adopt the twin keyboard approach (both an organ and a piano player) alongside The Band (whose "The Weight" was recorded by Spooky Tooth as a single in 1968), Procol Harum, and Mott the Hoople. They formed in October 1967, out of a combination of The Ramrods (1960 - late 1963), The V.I.P.'s (late 1963 - April 1967) and Art (April — October 1967). The line-up changed several times, but typically was Mike Harrison (keyboards/vocals), Greg Ridley (bass guitar/vocals), Luther (Luke) Grosvenor (guitar/vocals), Mike Kellie (drums), and Gary Wright (organ/vocals). They formed in October 1967, out of a combination of The Ramrods (1960 - late 1963), The V.I.P.'s (late 1963 - April 1967) and Art (April — October 1967). It's All About is the 1968  debut album of the band. The album was originally released in England by Island Records. The American version of the album, entitled Spooky Tooth, was originally released on Bell in 1968. It was reissued in 1971 as Tobacco Road.

Skip Bifferty was a rock  band formed in early 1966, when The Chosen Few (Featuring Alan Hull, later of Lindisfarne) from Newcastle upon Tyne changed their name and got a new singer, Graham Bell. Their outings on vinyl were few and far between, but included the much re-issued 1967 album Skip Bifferty, recently released with bonus Radio tracks as "The Story of Skip Bifferty" on Sanctuary Records. Some of their songs were covered by established artistes such as Cilla Black, The Tremeloes and The Kingsmen ("Louie Louie"). They had a following on the "live" circuit and are remembered with great affection. Their manager was Don Arden, father of Sharon Osbourne. They went through some personnel changes (Paul Nichols drums on Heavy Jelly). Bassist Colin Gibson went on to work with Ginger Baker, Bert Jansch, Alvin Lee, Van Morrison amongst others. John Turnbull  and Mick Gallagher reappeared in 1977 as The Blockheads, backing Ian Dury.

Strawberry Alarm Clock - 1968 - Wake up Its Tomorrow

Strawberry Alarm Clock is a psychedelic rock band from Los Angeles best known for their 1967 hit "Incense and Peppermints". The group took its name as an homage to the Beatles' psychedelic hit "Strawberry Fields Forever", reportedly, at the suggestion of their record company Uni Records. They are often thought of as a "one-hit wonder" and were instrumental in the development of bubblegum pop music in the United States. Wake Up...It's Tomorrow is the second album by Strawberry Alarm Clock. It is the last album to feature the classic Incense and Peppermints lineup. The album features two charted hits: "Tomorrow" (#23, the group's second and last Top 40 record) and "Sit With The Guru" (#65). The Banana Splits Adventure Hour was an hour-long, packaged television program that featured both live action and animated segments. The Banana Splits' bubblegum pop rock and roll was provided by studio professionals, including Joey Levine ("I Enjoy Being a Boy", "It's a Good Day for a Parade"); Al Kooper ("You're the Lovin' End"); Barry White ("Doin' the Banana Split"); Gene Pitney ("Two Ton Tessie") and Jimmy Radcliffe provided his songs ("I'm Gonna Find A Cave", "Soul", "Don't Go Away Go-Go Girl", "Adam Had 'Em" and "The Show Must Go On") but did not contribute vocals to Splits recordings. The music director was music publisher Aaron Schroeder while production duties were mainly handled by David Mook. In 1968, The Banana Splits released this album titled We're the Banana Splits. By  19 February, The  Beatles had their first number one record in Britain. Between the end of the Shapiro tour and  the beginning of a series of live dates including another tour – this one with Tommy Roe and Chris  Montez – Brian  Epstein and George  Martin scheduled a  recording session intended to produce the band’s  third single. The material on this  disc represents  nearly  everything  that  made it  to  tape  during  those sessions, including five takes of ‘One  After 909.’ Repeated breakdowns, resulting  from a fourway  uncertainty  regarding  arrangement,  assured  this  would  become  The Beatles’ first  abandoned song.  George Martin’s  guidance remains  very strong, most notably in shaping  the structure of ‘From  Me To You.’ The  song’s overdub reel,  typically bootlegged  as it  appears in  EMI’s vaults  (in a  fragmentary state,  reflecting the  removal of  the edit  pieces), has  been restored  here, revealing  step-by-step  the  process  by  which  the  finished  recording was constructed.

The last half of 1963 saw The Beatles transformed from a group with a few hit singles into a force that dominated the British music scene. Their own radio show on the BBC (Pop Go The Beatles) made them a household presence. Brian Epstein's roster of acts from now-fashionable Liverpool rode the wave of The Beatles' stardom and began tapping the ever-growing Lennon-McCartney songhook (two of which, `Bad To Me' and `I'm In Love,' are represented here in demo form), often with George Martin producing. And the hits, of course, just kept on comin'. `She Loves You' entered the charts 21 August and was number 1 by mid-September, by which time The Beatles were well into sessions for their second album. Personal appearances increased, and the band was building a momentum that would soon lead to their breakthrough in America. The single that served as the springboard for that breakthrough, `I Want To Hold Your Hand' b/w `This Boy,' found John Lennon and Paul McCartney unmistakably in full command of their compositional powers, while Paul began taking a more assertive role in arranging the session. (Paul's leadership is also in evidence during the recording of `Hold Me Tight,' heard on this disc as well.) And finally, this 17 October session was The Beatles' first four-track recording, a technological upgrade which would very soon open the door to a revolution in the studio.
