Like all the great rock revolutions, punk was fueled by singles. Sure, there were a lot of tremendous albums, but all the artists that cut great LPs also had great 7"s — and in the case of Television and Patti Smith, they had independent singles released prior to their first albums that never appeared on their debuts. Since rock criticism tends to be album-driven, singles tend to get slightly overlooked, and since punk is a rock critic's favorite, some revisionist historians paint the era as fueled by albums, not singles. Rhino's excellent four-disc No Thanks! The '70s Punk Rebellion corrects that error by focusing on the singles, winding up with a one-stop introduction and summary of the era that is as good as Loud, Fast & Out of Control, their similar set on early rock & roll. Hüsker Dü was an American rock band formed in Saint Paul, Minnesota in 1979. The band's continual members were guitarist Bob Mould, bassist Greg Norton, and drummer Grant Hart. Hüsker Dü never achieved mainstream success, and sold modestly. Following a series of unsuccessful albums, including Zen Arcade (1984) and New Day Rising (1985), the band signed to Warner Bros. Records in 1986, becoming one of the first American underground rock bands to sign with a major record label. Hüsker Dü first gained notice as a hardcore punk band with thrashing tempos and screamed vocals. The band developed a more melodic musical style as they drifted away from their early sound, helping to develop the early alternative rock sound in the process. Mould and Hart split the songwriting and singing duties; Mould's lyrics were known for being more soul-searching and intense than the often whimsical and cryptic ones of Hart. Hüsker Dü broke up in 1987 without having achieved a popular breakthrough. Flip Your Wig is a 1985 album Hüsker Dü, and its last release on SST Records. With each album, Hüsker Dü's sound grew more sophisticated. By the time of this release, they had signed a major-label record deal. However, the band felt they owed one more album to SST and delivered Flip Your Wig. Perhaps owing to the expedient circumstances of its recording, Flip Your Wig is overall lighter in tone than Hüsker Dü's earlier albums, with filler such as "The Baby Song." In this respect, it is viewed as less essential than New Day Rising and Zen Arcade, but critical opinion of the album generally registers high. 01 Flip Your Wig 02 Every Everything 03 Makes No Sense At All 04 Hate Paper Doll 05 Green Eyes 06 Divide And Conquer 07 Games 08 Find Me 09 The Baby Song 10 Flexable Flyer 11 Private Plane 12 Keep Hanging On 13 The Wit And The Wisdom 14 Don't Know Yet LINK

The Clash were an English punk band that formed in 1976 as part of the original wave of British punk rock. Along with punk, their music incorporated elements of reggae, ska, dub, funk, rap, dance and rockabilly. For most of their recording career, The Clash consisted of Joe Strummer (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Mick Jones (lead guitar, vocals), Paul Simonon (bass guitar, backing vocals, occasional lead vocals) and Nicky "Topper" Headon (drums, percussion). Headon left the group in 1982, and internal friction led to Jones's departure the following year. The group continued with new members, but finally disbanded in early 1986. Combat Rock is the fifth studio album by The Clash, released in 1982. It was the last album to feature the classic line-up before Mick Jones was sacked and Topper Headon was kicked out for his heroin addiction. Although the album includes different styles of music, it is considerably more straight-forward and less experimental than their previous album Sandinista!. In the United Kingdom the album charted at #2, spending 23 weeks in the UK charts. The album reached #7 in the United States, spending 61 weeks on the chart, and was certified platinum. (And eventually years later 2X Platinum.)

Subhumans are an English punk band formed in the Warminster and Melksham area of Wiltshire in 1980. Dick Lucas joined later in the year, having formerly been in another local band, The Mental. Other members had been in The Stupid Humans. The band's musical style is typically classified as hardcore punk or anarcho-punk. The band released a demo in 1981. It was heard by members of the band Flux of Pink Indians, after being sent to them by Graham Burnett of the New Crimes fanzine, and the band were so impressed that they offered the Subhumans a chance to put out a record on their newly formed Spiderleg record label. Shortly afterwards the Subhumans began to release material on their own Bluurg Records label. After a 1987-2004 partial inactivity, Subhumans is touring and recording again. Dead Kennedys are an American punk rock band, formed in San Francisco, California in 1978. Pioneers of hardcore during the 1980s, the band gained a large underground following in the international punk music scene. Their music mixed the more experimental elements of British 1970s punk with the raw energy of the 1980s American hardcore punk scene. Dead Kennedys' songs mixed deliberately shocking lyrics with satirical and sarcastic criticism of social and political issues of the Reagan era. A Skateboard Party is a live album and was released in August 1983 on Starving Missile Records in cooperation with Alternative Tentacles as a limited edition release. The concerts took place in Stuttgart and Munich, on September 13, 1982, and September 15, 1982, respectively. 01 - Holiday In Cambodia 02 - Let's Lynch The Landlord 03 - Chemical Warfare 04 - Nazi Punks Fuck Off 05 - We've Got A Bigger Problem Now 06 - Too Trunk To Fuck 07 - Kill The Poor 08 - Man With A Dog 09 - Forward To Death 10 - Kepone Factory 11 - Life Sentence 12 - Trust Your Mechanic 13 - Moral Majority 14 - Forest Fire 15 - Winnebago Warrior 16 - Police Jerk 17 - Bleed For Me LINK

The band formed with an original line-up of Phil Stanton (vocals), Rob "Spike" Harrington (guitar and vocals), Andy Lealand (guitar), Mark "Shark" Harris (drums), and Mark "Savage" Parsons (bass guitar). Doctors of Madness were a British protopunk art rock band formed in 1974 in a cellar in Brixton, south London by the composer and lead singer/guitarist Richard Strange, known as ‘Kid’ Strange. Active as a recording and touring band until late 1978, they found mainly cult level success and recognition that was not enough to sustain them, but they were later cited as a pivotal influence on the early British punk rock movement.
