Brian Epstein had booked engagements for the band every day Immediately after sessions for the Please Please Me album, The Beatles went back on the road for nightly live shows and the second leg of the tour, which had begun 2 February, with Helen Shapiro headlining. Brian Epstein had booked engagements for the band every day throughout the rest of the month (except for 25 February) as the "Please Please Me” single made its way up the charts. By 19 February, The Beatles had theirfirst number one record in Britain. Between the end of the Shapiro tour and the beginning of a series of live dates including another tour – this one with Tommy Roe and Chris Montez – Brian Epstein and George Martin scheduled a recording session intended to produce the band’s third single. The material on this disc represents nearly everything that made it to tape during those sessions, including five takes of ‘One After 909.’ Repeated breakdowns, resulting from a fourway uncertainty regarding arrangement, assured this would become The Beatles’ first abandoned song. George Martin’s guidance remains very strong, most notably in shaping the structure of ‘From Me To You.’ The song’s overdubreel, typically bootlegged as it appears in EMI’s vaults (in a fragmentary state, reflecting the removal of the edit pieces), has been restored here, revealing step-by-step the process by which the finished recording was constructed. 01 - From Me To You - Take 1 02 - From Me To You - Take 2 03 - From Me To You - Take 3 04 - From Me To You - Take 4 05 - From Me To You - Take 5 06 - From Me To You - Take 6 07 - From Me To You - Take 7 08 - Thank You Girl - Take 1 09 - Thank You Girl - Take 2 10 - Thank You Girl - Take 3 11 - Thank You Girl - Take 4 12 - Thank You Girl - Take 5 13 - Thank You Girl - Take 6 14 - Thank You Girl - Take 7 Edit Piece 15 - Thank You Girl - Take 8 Edit Piece 16 - Thank You Girl - Take 9 Edit Piece 17 - Thank You Girl - Take 10 Edit Piece 18 - Thank You Girl - Take 11 Edit Piece 19 - Thank You Girl - Take 12 Edit Piece 20 - Thank You Girl - Take 13 Edit Piece 21 - From Me To You - Take 8 Track 2 22 - From Me To You - Take 9 Edit Piece 2 23 - From Me To You - Take 10 Edit Piece 3 24 - From Me To You - Take 11 Edit Piece 4 25 - From Me To You - Take 12 Edit Piece 5 26 - From Me To You - Take 13 Edit Piece 6 27 - One After 909 - Take 1 28 - One After 909 - Take 2 29 - One After 909 - Take 3 30 - One After 909 - Take 4 31 - One After 909 - Take 5 Edit Piece 32 - From Me To You - Edit Of Takes 1, 2, 8, 9 And 10 33 - From Me To You - 1982 Mix 34 - Thank You Girl - Take 14 Track 2 35 - Thank You Girl - Take 30 36 - One After 909 - Anthology Mix LINK
The last half of 1963 saw The Beatles transformed from a group with a few hit singles into a force that dominated the British music scene. Their own radio show on the BBC (Pop Go The Beatles) made them a household presence. Brian Epstein's roster of acts from now-fashionable Liverpool rode the wave of The Beatles' stardom and began tapping the ever-growing Lennon-McCartney songhook (two of which, `Bad To Me' and `I'm In Love,' are represented here in demo form), often with George Martin producing. And the hits, of course, just kept on comin'. `She Loves You' entered the charts 21 August and was number 1 by mid-September, by which time The Beatles were well into sessions for their second album. Personal appearances increased, and the band was building a momentum that would soon lead to their breakthrough in America. The single that served as the springboard for that breakthrough, `I Want To Hold Your Hand' b/w `This Boy,' found John Lennon and Paul McCartney unmistakably in full command of their compositional powers, while Paul began taking a more assertive role in arranging the session. (Paul's leadership is also in evidence during the recording of `Hold Me Tight,' heard on this disc as well.) And finally, this 17 October session was The Beatles' first four-track recording, a technological upgrade which would very soon open the door to a revolution in the studio. 01 - I'll Be On My Way - BBC 02 - Bad To Me - Demo 03 - She Loves You - Rs1 04 - She Loves You - Rs2 05 - Michelle - Guitar Instrumental 06 - Piano Instrumental 07 - Please Mr Postman - Take 3 08 - Please Mr Postman - Take 9 09 - It Won't Be Long - Take 7 10 - It Won't Be Long - Take 10 11 - Don't Bother Me - Demo 12 - Message To Australia - 12 Sept 1963 13 - Hold Me Tight - Take 20 14 - Hold Me Tight - Take 21 15 - Hold Me Tight - Take 22 16 - Hold Me Tight - Take 23 17 - Hold Me Tight - Take 24 18 - Hold Me Tight - Take 25 19 - Hold Me Tight - Take 26 20 - Hold Me Tight - Take 27 21 - Hold Me Tight - Take 28 22 - Hold Me Tight - Take 29 23 - Don't Bother Me - Take10 24 - Don't Bother Me - Take 11 25 - Don't Bother Me - Take 12 26 - Don't Bother Me - Take 13 27 - I'm In Love - Demo 28 - I Want To Hold Your Hand - Take 1 (Fragment) 29 - I Want To Hold Your Hand - Take 2 (Fragment) 30 - I Want To Hold Your Hand - Take 9 (Chat & Intro) 31 - I Want To Hold Your Hand - Take Unknown 32 - This Boy - Tk Unknown 33 - This Boy - Take 12 34 - This Boy - Take 13 35 - I Want To Hold Your Hand - Rs17 From Australian 45 36 - This Boy - Rs15 37 - I Want To Hold Your Hand - Anthology Surround 38 - This Boy - Anthology Restored LINK

The Beatles - 1963 - Please, Please Me Please Please Me is the debut album by The Beatles. Parlophone rush-released the album on 22 March 1963 in the United Kingdom to capitalise on the success of singles "Please Please Me" (number one on most lists but only number two on Record Retailer) and "Love Me Do" (number 17). Of the album's fourteen songs, eight were written by Lennon/McCartney, early evidence of what Rolling Stone later called "[their invention of] the idea of the self-contained rock band, writing their own hits and playing their own instruments." 01 - I Saw Her Standing There 02 - Misery 03 - Anna (Go To Him) 04 - Chains 05 - Boys 06 - Ask Me Why 07 - Please Please Me 08 - Love Me Do 09 - PS I Love You 10 - Baby It's You 11 - Do You Want Know A Secret 12 - A Taste Of Honey 13 - There's A Place 14 - Twist And Shout LINK

In April 1960 during the school vacation Paul borrowed a neighbour's tape recorder to record the then-called "Beatals" in his family home at No.20 Forthlin Road in Liverpool. In 1961 different tapes from these sessions were given to their friends in Hamburg, Hans Walther Braun and Astrid Kirchherr. In the late 70's Frank Dostal borrowed both original tapes and spliced them together in the Teldec studio on Heussweg is Hamburg. He made three copies, one for Hans Walther Braun, one for Astrid Kirchherr and one for himself. In April 1988 some tracks of one of these copies were released on the German LP "The Quarrymen At Home". Soon later most of the other tracks were released on a Dutch double LP called "John, Paul, George and Stu - Liverpool May 1960". The final missing vocal track "The World Is Waiting For The Sunrise" finally made it on Belmo's "Happy Christmas" single in 1991. All future CD releases were lifted from these sets which unfortunately were heavily compressed and edited. Even the official "Anthology Vol.1" double CD has the reverb and echo that was added to the tape in 1988! So it's not copied from the source tape but from the vinyl bootleg. For the first time now you have the chance to listen to the material lifted from the original source tape. To be honest, there are still some little snippets missing but many tracks are one or two seconds longer than on any previous release and one song for the first time ever could be heard in it's entirely: "Well Darling" on all previous releases was shortened from the original 5'06" to about 2'30" or 3'30". Here it is in full length without any fades or edits!

Around October of 1965, a small label called Savage Records released an album of Sheridan material. Where Savage got the songs to use on the album is not known. My theory is this: an album called The Beatles First had been issued in Germany in April of 1964, containing much of the same lineup as The Savage Young Beatles. Bootleggers in New York bought a copy of the record, and some time later -- with MGM's "My Bonnie" and Atco's "Ain't She Sweet" having hit the charts -- they decided to pirate the German Polydor album. Apparently in order to avoid possible lawsuits, they removed three of the four sides of the MGM and Atco hit singles from the album, reducing it to eight songs. The Savage album, appropriately named The Savage Young Beatles, contained four of the Sheridan/Beatles tracks and four songs by Tony Sheridan. The front cover deceptively shows the group without Tony and mentions Tony's name (on the front cover) only at the bottom, as though "T. Sheridan" were one of the songs. To its credit, however, the proper lineup of the Beatles (with Pete Best) was shown on the cover -- rather than making it appear as though these were "new" releases.(Frank Daniels)

Recordings of The Beatles in BBC Radio and Radio Sweden auditions 63-65. About the name "Johnny and the Moondogs", by October 26, 1959, the group was streamlined to just John, Paul McCartney, and George Harrison, and the threesome decided to make a second go at Carroll Levis' TV show "Discoveries." They called themselves Johnny and the Moondogs just for these auditions, which they unfortunately failed. One can only wonder whether Johnny and the Moondogs might have become a household name if they had passed the audition!
