Brownsville Station was a rock band from Michigan that was popular in the 1970s. Original members included Cub Koda (guitarist/vocalist), Mike Lutz (guitarist/vocalist), T.J. Cronley (drummer), and Tony Driggins (bassist/vocals). Brownsville Station was formed in Ann Arbor in 1969. Brownsville Station's early albums included song covers from bands which had inspired them. In 1970, they released their debut studio album No BS on a Warners Bros. label. Their biggest hit, "Smokin' In the Boys Room", from their 1973 album Yeah!, reached #3 on U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart and #27 in the UK Singles Chart. The track sold over two million copies and was awarded a gold disc status on 15 January 1974.A Night In The Town "is, together with Yeah & Schoolpunks their best album. It's also the one closest to the deep Detroit roots that brought forward so many magnificent bands thru out time of soul, blues and RnB". Brownsville Station disbanded in 1979 and their final studio album, Air Special, was released by Epic in 1980. 01 - Rock With The Music 02 - I Got Time 03 - Lovin' Lady Lee 04 - Mad For Me 05 - Mister Robert 06 - Wanted (Dead Or Alive) 07 - Country Flavour 08 - Jonah's Here To Stay 09 - Leavin' Here 10 - The Man Who Wanted More (Saints Rock & Roll) LINK
East of Eden was a British progressive rock band from Bristol, who had a Top 10 hit in England with the single, "Jig-a-Jig", in 1971. The track became something of a stylistic albatross around the band's neck, since it did not resemble their usual sound or anything else they normally played. Although some might consider this group as being a symphonic progressive band, others state that their style is mostly jazz oriented. Combining flutes, violins and tape loops to folk, gypsy and psychedelic music, the East of Eden style was always heavily supported on a pure rock base; strong and experimental. Dave Arbus / electric violin, flute, bagpipe, recorders, two saxophones, Ron Caines / Soprano & Alto saxophones (acoustic & amplified), organ, vocals, Dave Dufont / percussions, Geoff Nicholson / guitars, Vocals and Steve York / bass guitar, Harmonica, Indian thumb piano. In 1968 they moved to London, and the group was signed to a recording contract with Decca's progressive rock imprint Deram label. In 1969 they released the Mercator Projected album, followed shortly after by the Snafu and Jig-a-Jig albums (both released in 1970). Roseville/Michigan band, Doug Koun, Len Dunn, Wayne and George R. Dunn. Some rock collectors/fans consider Ellie Pop’s only album a mid 60’s classic. The sound is straight out of 1966/early 1967 (though this album was released in 1968) with strong Beatles influenced melodies and harmonies. Other comparisons that come to mind are a guitar oriented Association or the Merry-Go-Round, on their less trippy, Beatles inspired material. 01 - Seven North Frederick 02 - Winner Loser 03 - Can't Be Love 04 - Remembering (Sunnybrook) 05 - Seems I've Changed 06 - Caught In The Rain 07 - Oh My Friend 08 - Some Time Ago 09 - No Thanks Mr. Mann 10 - Whatcha Gonna Do LINK
Flash was an English progressive rock group, formed by former Yes guitarist Peter Banks and vocalist Colin Carter in August 1971. Bassist Ray Bennett and drummer Mike Hough completed the line-up. The band went straight into the studio in November 1971 to record its debut album, and performed its first gig on January 14, 1972 (coincidentally, exactly one year later, on January 14, 1973, Flash would fill New York's Philharmonic Hall). The band released three albums, Flash (1972), In The Can (1972) and Out Of Our Hands (1973). Austin, Texas band formed in 1966. George Kinney (voc, guitar), Tom Ramsey (lead guitar), Jimmy Bird (rhythm guitar), Bill Hallmark (bass), and Bobby Rector (drums). Produced by Rogers, (Kenny Rogers brother), 1967's Power Plant actually bares a strong resemblance to The 13th Floor Elevators' catalog. The two bands certainly share the same mid-60s; low-tech Texas-psych roots. As a small label with little in the way of resources, International Artists did little to promote the LP nationally. Frustrated with the situation, Kinney promptly tendered his notice, relocating to California. The band subsequently collapsed with Hallmark reappeared as a member of Rubyyat. 01 - Evolution 02 - This Way Please 03 - Starvation 04 - I'll Be Around 05 - Seeing Is Believing 06 - My Time 07 - A Nice Surprise 08 - Every Day 09 - Tell Me Why 10 - Reaching Out To You LINK
Hotlegs was a short-lived English pop band best known for its hit single "Neanderthal Man" in 1970. The band consisted of Eric Stewart, Kevin Godley, Lol Creme and – briefly – Graham Gouldman. According to Eric Stewart, in the 2009 BBC 'The Record Producers' radio documentary, the band's name came about because "there was a lovely girl at the time, a receptionist called Kathy, and she used to wear these hot pants, and we always used to call her "hot legs", and so we thought we'll call the group Hotlegs". Thinks: School Stinks is the first album released by Hotlegs. The album, featuring the band's hit single "Neanderthal Man", was recorded at Strawberry Studios in Stockport near Manchester and engineered by the studio's co-owners, Eric Stewart and Peter Tattersall. The cover, designed by Kevin Godley and Lol Creme, depicted a scratched school desk, a concept that was repeated two years later on School's Out by Alice Cooper. The album was released in some countries with an alternative cover. In 1972 the band was relaunched as 10cc. 01 - Neanderthal Man 02 - How Many Times 03 - Desperate Dan 04 - Take Me Back 05 - Um Wah, Um Woh 06 - Suite F.A. 1st Movement - On My Way 2nd Movement - Indecision 3rd Movement - The Return 07 - Fly Away 08 - Run Baby Run 09 - All God's Children LINK
Vanilla Fudge is an American rock band. The band's original lineup - vocalist/organist Mark Stein, bassist/vocalist Tim Bogert, lead guitarist/vocalist Vince Martell, and drummer/vocalist Carmine Appice - recorded five albums during the years 1966-69, before disbanding in 1970. The band has reunited in various configurations over the years, and is currently operating with its four original members. The band has been cited as, "one of the few American links between psychedelia and what soon became heavy metal." Renaissance is the third album by Vanilla Fudge. Released in summer 1968, it was the band's first album to feature mostly original material, with five of its seven tracks penned by band members. The original album's two cover tunes are Essra Mohawk's "The Spell That Comes After" (erroneously credited on original pressings of the LP to Frank Zappa's art director Cal Schenkel), and "Season Of The Witch," originally written and performed by the Scottish folk singer Donovan. The band also interpolates lyrics from a second Essra Mohawk song, "We Never Learn," into their rendition of "Season Of The Witch." The album peaked at #20 on the Billboard album charts in July 1968. 01 - The Sky Cried - When I Was A Boy 02 - Thoughts 03 - Paradise 04 - That's What Makes A Man 05 - The Spell That Comes After 06 - Faceless People 07 - Season Of The Witch 08 - All In Your Mind 09 - The Look Of Love 10 - Where Is My Mind LINK
Almost nothing is known about this west coast pyschedelic-pop band from the late 60s. It seems like they went through 3 name changes and 2 recording deals in 1968 and then vanished. The band were previously known as Sunlights Seven and recorded an unreleased, acetate-only album in Hollywood: Sunstroke, circa 1967. Their repertoire largely comprised of early versions of songs re-recorded for the Creation Of Sunlight album. Orpheus is a Worcester, Massachusetts-based rock band that enjoyed popularity in the 1960s and early 1970s. In recent years there has been a resurgence of interest in the avant guard band. Original members included guitarist/vocalists Bruce Arnold and Jack McKennes, bass guitarist Eric "The Snake" Gulliksen, and drummer Harry Sandler but many others have since been a part of the group. Orpheus recorded three albums and four singles for MGM Records produced by musical legend Alan Lorber, including their best known hit, Can’t Find The Time, though it was later work that came to actually define the band. From Cincinnati, Ohio, this heavy blues-rock\psychedelic group played a heavy, very keyboard-dominated blend of music. Their two albums have distinct psychedelic influences and although both have their moments are sometimes a bit messy. Both albums are sought-after by collectors. Stephen Bacon (percussion, tympani, vocals), Ed Blackmon (keyboards, vocals), Michael Jones (guitar, vocals), Roger Sauer (bass, vocals), Leonard LeBlanc (bass, vocals), Mike Wheeler (guitar, bass). Lenny LeBlanc went on to become a successful Christian music artist, whilst Mike Wheeler who played with the band in their last two years, went on to work with Grammy winning Nashville songwriter Mike Reid. Wheeler also led an act called Wheels, who recorded on Boardwalk, with an album produced by Craig Fuller, and who toured with Little Feat in '78. White Witch was a glam rock/psychedelic/hard rock band formed in 1971 in Tampa, Florida. The band originally featured lead singer Ronald "Ronn" (or "Ron") Goedert, guitarist Charles "Buddy" Richardson, keyboardist Hardin "Buddy" Pendergrass, drummer Robert "Bobby" Shea and bassist Loyall "Beau" Fisher. Several of the band members had belonged to a popular late-60s Tampa-area band called The Tropics. Their name was a paean to "white magic", contrary to the "black magic" of groups like Black Sabbath. As the band announced before their shows: "To bring good where there once was evil, to bring love where there once was hate, to bring wisdom where there once was ignorance; this is the power of White Witch".The group was inducted into the Florida Musicians Hall of Fame's Florida Music Honor Roll. White Witch, the debut album, was released on Capricorn Records, in 1972. After the second album, A Spiritual Greeting, White Witch did a bit more touring and recorded four tracks on demo, but broke up in the late 1970s before a third album was recorded. 01 - Parabrahm Greeting - Dwellers of the Threshold 02 - Help me Lord 03 - Don't Close your Mind 04 - You'r the one 05 - Sleepwalkerr 06 - Home Grown Girl 07 - And I'm Leaving 08 - Illusion 09 - It's so nice to be Stoned 10 - Have you ever Thought of Changing - Jackson Slade 11 - The Gift LINK
After leaving Jethro Tull, Glenn Cornick formed Wild Turkey in 1971, initially with: Graham Williams (guitar), Alan 'Tweke' Lewis (guitar), John "Pugwash" Weathers (ex Pete Brown & Piblokto!) (drums) and Gary Pickford-Hopkins (ex Eyes of Blue) on vocals; but Weathers and Williams left to join Graham Bond's Magick before Wild Turkey recorded any material. They were replaced by Jon Blackmore (guitar and vocals) and Jeff Jones (ex Man) (drums) who joined Cornick, Tweke and Gary to record Wild Turkey's first album Battle Hymn. The album was promoted on UK and US tours supporting Black Sabbath; Tony Iommi having briefly played with Cornick in Jethro Tull. After disbanding 1974, the group's members went their separate ways. More than two decades later, their 1996 reunion spawned a third studio album, 1996's Stealer of Years. About Battle Hymn..."A fine album of intelligently-constructed, guitar-centric tunes, drawing from heavy bluesrock, folk and early British progressive influences".

Mount Rushmore was a rock band in the late 1960s from San Francisco, California that played a heavy blues rock style with psychedelic elements. The band formed in late 1966 at 1915 Oak Street, a large Victorian rooming house in the Haight-Ashbury district. In June and July 1967 they were featured on posters for shows at the Avalon Ballroom with other bands including the Quicksilver Messenger Service and Big Brother and the Holding Company. After some members including Phillips left for the band Phoenix in 1968, new members were added and the group made two albums. Warren B. Phillips was the former lead singer for the band and wrote a few songs that were recorded by the band after he left. "Supposedly a 2001 reissue of an untitled 1968 album, that only made it to the test-pressing stage. One copy surfaced in 2000 with a price-tag of $1500. This group/project was in Bill Holmes' All-American stable of inter-twined groups from in and around the Santa Barbara, California area. Greg Munford had been with Thee Sixpence up to the point that they recorded the Incense And Peppermint 45 and became The Strawberry Alarm Clock. Crystal Circus would appear to have been his next venture. He was involved in other projects and a 45 released in '67 by The Shapes Of Sound - Lost Weekend / Twisted Conversation (All-American 343) - is a likely candidate, given that Twisted Conversation turns up on the Crystal Circus LP. Munford, Solomon and Bielan were certainly involved with another band on All-American, The Indescribably Delicious, and are credited on the I.D. LP reissue - Good Enough To Eat. Bob Feldman also pops up amongst the composer credits. If this is a bona fide album, one has to wonder why it was not released, given the success of the Strawberry Alarm Clock. The vocal style and arrangements on the soft-centred pop-psych numbers (In Relation, Merry Go Round, Circus And Zoo World) are uncannily similar. There are trippy vibes and elegant baroque gestures (Castles, Twisted Conversation) counterbalanced by harder material that harks back to the sounds of Thee Sixpence:- strident garage-pop with blistering guitar (Don't Say I Didn't Warn You), Cream-like fuzz-grunge (The Difference Between Us), and brass-pop bombast (Never Again). Whatever the real truth behind it, this reissue unearths a fine selection of '67-'68 confectionery - recommended."(Max Waller in "Fuzz, Acid and Flowers")

Jay and the Americans was a pop music group popular in the 1960s. Their initial lineup consisted of John "Jay" Traynor, Howard Kane, Kenny Vance and Sandy Deanne, though their greatest success on the charts came after Traynor had been replaced as lead singer by Jay Black. They were discovered while performing in student venues at New York University in the late 1950s. They auditioned for Leiber and Stoller, who gave the group its name. In the manner of the time, Leiber and Stoller wanted to extend this to "Binky Jones and the Americans," but Traynor declined to be known as Binky Jones his whole career. He instead offered up "Jay," a family nickname, and it suited everyone. In 1968, they recorded the 11th album with their favorite oldies called Sands of Time, which included "This Magic Moment," which was originally done by the Drifters. The single went to #9 in January 1969. It sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc. The group split in 1973.

Azitis was a California quartet featuring "Don Lower" (vocals, bass guitar), "Michael Welch" (lead and rhythm guitars, flute), "Dennis Sullivan" (organ and piano), and "Steve Nelson" (vocals, drums). Originally known as "Help", until threatened with legal action by the British band (on "Decca Records")of the same name they changed the name in Azitis (pronounced "as-it-is" from a reference to the biblical verse, "Thy will be done on earth [azitis] in heaven"). The band was first conceived in 1966 by Sacramento-area musicians "Don Lower" and "Steve Nelson". "Don Lower" had cut his musical teeth playing in two of the area's better Garage Rock outfits, "The Cambridge Coroners" and "The Roadside Business", and after "Don Lower" met "Steve Nelson", the two formed a songwriting partnership. By 1969, the band had reached a level of quality that necessitated the production of recorded music. After signing to Sacramento's own "Elco Records" in 1969, the enormous volume of original songs made it difficult to choose which to produce. After many performances and audience reactions, two compositions were chosen and a date was reserved for the recording session: "Life Worth Living" backed with "Questions Why". From there, the four-piece changed its name to Azitis, and in 1971, the band cut its first and only full-length, "Help", a Christian Psychedelic classic.
