Shelagh McDonald is a Scottish folk singer, song-writer and guitarist who released two albums before her abrupt and mysterious disappearance in 1971. On her albums, she was backed up by many notables within the English folk-rock scene, including Richard Thompson, Dave Mattacks, Danny Thompson, Keith Tippett, Keith Christmas, the Fotheringay rhythm section, as well as Ian Whiteman, Roger Powell and Michael Evans, then members of Mighty Baby. On 23 June 2005, by which time McDonald's albums had been reissued on CD, an article by Charles Donovan appeared in The Independent, the first high profile piece about McDonald's disappearance. This prompted copycat features in local papers, the Glasgow Herald and the Scottish Daily Mail. It was the latter of these that caught the eye of McDonald herself. In November 2005, McDonald turned up in the offices of the Scottish Daily Mail and told them her story. She retreated from public life after a bad LSD trip left her paranoid and hallucinating, with a ruined voice. Living with her parents and working privately in Edinburgh, she met and married bookseller Gordon Farquhar; together, they lived a nomadic lifestyle in north Britain, living on welfare benefits and moving from house to house, and later tent to tent.01 - Mirage02 - Look Over The Hill And Far Away03 - Crusoe04 - Waiting For The Wind To Rise05 - Ophelia's Song06 - Richmond07 - Let No Man Steal Your Thyme08 - Peacock Lady09 - Silk And Leather10 - You Know You Can't Lose11 - Ophelia's Song12 - Jesus Is Just All Right [Bonus]13 - Book Of Rhyme [Bonus]14 - What More Can I Say [Bonus]15 - The City's Cry (Demo 1) [Bonus]16 - The City's Cry (Demo 2) [Bonus]17 - Rod's Song (Demo) [Bonus]18 - Stargazer (False Start) [Bonus]19 - Stargazer (Demo) [Bonus]LINK

Blue-eyed soul, freakbeat and state-of-the-art girl pop, South African Sharon Tandy was one of the best voices of the time. You've Gotta Believe It's Sharon Tandy includes virtually all the singer's UK singles 1965-69, upon most of which Sharon was accompanied by the Fleur De Lys - tracks such as Daughter Of The Sun and mod anthem Hold On have been sought-after collectors' items for years. Sharon was equally adept at pop, as evidenced by gems such as Perhaps Not Forever, and You've Gotta Believe It, the latter an absolute high-water mark of British girl recordings. A ragtag collection of odds and ends, live and studio, from both the Big Brother and solo era. The best cuts are on the Janis box in different versions, but serious fans will find some interesting items here, especially the Cheap Thrills-era outtakes and live performances; "Misery 'N," "Farewell Song," and "Catch Me Daddy" were easily good enough to have qualified for inclusion on that album. Lori Burton possessed one of the most powerful, lush female voices; she was part of a fairly successful writing and production team with a woman named Pam Sawyer; she was The Whyte Boots. Actually, both women went on to more successful songwriting careers writing for Motown, several individual groups such as Young Rascals, and doing session work with some of the biggest names in the business, while this record tanked and has remained relatively obscure. There are some nice, unappreciated gems on here that deserve a brighter place in the sun. Burton and Sawyer were briefly signed to Motown as songwriters and were one of the few (if not the only) female production teams on the New York rock scene in the mid-'60s. But Lori Burton was also a very credible blue-eyed pop/soul singer, who had a very good earthy voice, delivering both cool sensual low growling and impassioned rasp at the most climactic points. She began recording as a solo act for Roulette in the mid-'60s and in 1967, issued this album, Breakout, on Mercury.01 - Nightmare [Mono Single Version]02 - Gotta Make You Love Me03 - Since I Lost Your Lovin'04 - There Is No Way (To Stop Lovin' You)05 - The Hurt Won't Go Away06 - Gotta Get Over You07 - Bye, Bye Charlie08 - Love Was09 - Let No One Come Between Us10 - Only Your Love11 - Nightmare12 - The Hurt Won't Go Away [Mono Single Version]13 - Bye, Bye Charlie [Mono Single Version]LINK

Ellen McIlwaine is an American singer-songwriter and musician best known for her career as a slide guitarist. Born in Nashville, McIlwaine was adopted by missionaries and raised in Kobe, Japan, giving her exposure to multiple languages and cultures. She attended Canadian Academy, a K-12 international school in Kobe, graduating in 1963. Her first experience in music was playing Ray Charles, Fats Domino and Professor Longhair songs on piano that she heard on Japanese radio. On moving to back to the United States she bought a guitar, beginning a stage career in Atlanta, Georgia in the mid-1960s. As a female vocalist who is known more for her acoustic guitar, her music tends to be classified in the folk sections of record stores, despite her strong roots in blues, soul and rock music, and her cover versions of songs by Isaac Hayes, Stevie Wonder and Browning Bryant. She has also recorded several covers of songs by Jimi Hendrix: she wrote "Underground River" about him.01 - Ain't No Two Ways About It (It's Love)02 - All To You03 - Sliding04 - Never Tell Your Mother She's Out Of Tune05 - Farther Along06 - I Don't Want To Play07 - Underground River08 - Everybody Wants To Go To Heaven (But Nobody Wants To Die)09 - Jimmy Jean10 - We The PeopleLINK

Linda Perhacs is an American psychedelic folk singer, who released her only album Parallelograms in 1970. Linda's sole album, originally released on Kapp in 1970, has gained its deserved fame and reputation in the folk-psych scene in the last years after the NY label Wild Places released it on CD format some few years ago. We could talk about Joni Mitchell and the likes if we had to compare with anything, but fans of folk music in all its variety must be delighted with this amazing album, a truly hippie psychedelic folk masterpiece and without any doubt one of the top albums of the genre. 01 - Chimacum Rain02 - Paper Mountain Man03 - Dolphin04 - Call Of The River05 - Sandy Goes06 - Parrallelograms07 - Hey Who Really Cares08 - Moons And Cattauls09 - Morning Colors10 - Porcelain Baked Over Cast-Iron Wedding11 - DeliciousLINK

Carolyn Hester is an American folk singer and songwriter. She was a figure in the early 1960s folk music revival. Carolyn Hester's first album was produced by Norman Petty in 1957. In 1960, she made her second album for the label run by the Clancy Brothers. She became known for "The House of the Rising Sun" and "She Moved Through the Fair". Hester was one of many young Greenwich Village singers who rode the crest of the 1960s folk music wave, and appeared on the cover of the May 30, 1964 issue of the Saturday Evening Post. According to Don Heckman of the Los Angeles Times, Hester was "one of the originals—one of the small but determined gang of ragtag, early-'60s folk singers who cruised the coffee shops and campuses, from Harvard Yard to Bleecker Street, convinced that their music could help change the world." Hester was dubbed "The Texas Songbird," and was politically active, spearheading the controversial boycott of TV's Hootenanny when Pete Seeger was blacklisted from it.01 - Come On Back02 - Come On In03 - 10 Train04 - Captain,my Captain05 - Water Is Wide06 - Carry It On07 - High Flying Bird08 - Three Young Men09 - Outward Bound10 - The Weaving Song11 - Sing Hallelujah12 - That's My Song13 - Summertime14 - It Takes So Long15 - Ain't That Rain16 - Buckeye Jim17 - Will You Send Your Love18 - Jute Mill Song19 - What's That I Hear20 - Where Did My Little Boy Go21 - Sidewalk City22 - I Saw Her23 - The Bad Girl24 - Playboys And PlaygirlsLINK

Yes are an English progressive rock band formed in London in 1968, generally regarded as one of the archetypal bands and pioneers of the genre. Despite many lineup changes, occasional splits within the group, and the ever-changing trends in popular music, the band have continued for more than 40 years and still retain a large following. They have sold over 30 million albums. The band's music blends symphonic and other classical structures with their own brand of rock music. Although the band's sole consistent member has been bass player Chris Squire, Yes are also generally noted for the distinctive high-register vocals of former lead singer Jon Anderson and the eclectic musical stylings of a succession of guitarists (Steve Howe, Peter Banks, Trevor Rabin, Billy Sherwood), keyboard players (Rick Wakeman, Tony Kaye, Patrick Moraz, Geoff Downes, Igor Khoroshev, Oliver Wakeman), and drummers (Alan White and Bill Bruford). Several band members became celebrated musicians and/or bandleaders in their own right, and a 1980 lineup of the band was briefly fronted by Trevor Horn (shortly before he became one of rock music's most celebrated record producers). Yes is the 1969 eponymous debut album from Yes, considered among the first progressive rock albums. With the original Yes line-up of vocalist Jon Anderson, bassist Chris Squire, guitarist Peter Banks, keyboardist Tony Kaye and drummer Bill Bruford, Yes was the quintet's original musical release. Lester Bangs favourably reviewed the album in Rolling Stone, writing that it was "the kind of album that sometimes insinuates itself into your routine with a totally unexpected thrust of musical power."

"One of the finest American progressive rock groups of the 70s". Yezda Urfa is an American progressive rock band founded in the fall of 1973. The band recorded two albums before breaking up in the spring of 1981. The band's music is currently distributed by Syn-phonic. The name Yezda Urfa comes from Yazd, Iran and Urfa, Turkey. The band came across these names while leafing through the dictionary, looking for a band name. Yazd was changed to Yezda to ease pronunciation. Described as a blend of Yes and Gentle Giant, Yezda Urfa is known for playing high-energy progressive rock. Catch Us If You Can (1965) (released with the title Having a Wild Weekend in the U.S.) was the feature-film debut of director John Boorman. Ostensibly designed as a vehicle for pop band The Dave Clark Five, whose popularity at the time almost rivalled that of The Beatles, and named after their hit song "Catch Us If You Can", this strangely downbeat film actually departs in various ways from the formula created by Richard Lester in A Hard Day's Night, and by Sidney J. Furie and Peter Yates with the Cliff Richard films. Although they perform the off-screen soundtrack music, The Dave Clark Five (unlike The Beatles) do not play themselves, but appear to be a team of freelance stuntmen/extras, led by the saturnine Steve (Dave Clark). Clark had worked as a stuntman on a number of films, providing him with experience and camera-sense that The Beatles would have lacked in A Hard Day's Night. Far from being a conventional pop vehicle, this serious, thought-provoking film concerns itself with the frailty of personal relationships, the flimsiness of dreams, and the difficulty of maintaining spontaneity and integrity in a stage-managed "society of the spectacle." 01 - Catch Us If You Can02 - On the Move03 - If You Come Back04 - Long Ago05 - Any Time You Want Love06 - I Can't Stand It07 - Your Turn To Cry08 - Hurting Inside09 - Don't Be Taken In10 - Don't You Realize11 - I Cried Over You12 - Sweet MemoriesLINK

Their song "Over And Over" went to number one in the U.S. on the Billboard Hot 100 at the end of December 1965, despite less than impressive sales in the UK, and they played to sell-out crowds on their tours of the U.S. Promoted as having a "cleaner" image than the Beatles, the Dave Clark Five were the first British band to tour the USA, and they made 18 appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show.
