UK progressive rock that blends rock, blues and jazz, featuring a horn section, a jazzy/bluesy progressive outfit. They utilised horns but it's some of the guitar leads which catch the ear. Roger Harrison guested on drums on the opening cut, Who Can I Trust? and their cover of Traffic's Coloured Rain. Most of the material was written by bassist Steve Hawthorn. This act should not be confused with the US Walrus, who issued an album in the US on Janus. Al Stewart is a Scottish singer-songwriter and folk-rock musician. Stewart came to stardom as part of the British folk revival in the 1960s and 1970s, and developed his own unique style of combining folk-rock songs with delicately woven tales of the great characters and events from history. He is best known for his hit 1976 single "Year of the Cat" from the platinum album Year of the Cat. Stewart released Orange in 1972. It was written after a tumultuous break-up with his girlfriend and muse, Mandi, and was very much a transitional album, combining songs in Stewart's confessional style with more intimations of the historical themes that he would increasingly adopt (e.g. "The News from Spain", with its prog-rock overtones, including dramatic piano by Rick Wakeman). Al Stewart - vocals, acoustic guitar, Tim Renwick - electric guitar, Spanish guitar, Cal Batchelor - Spanish guitar, Tim Walker - Spanish guitar, Brinsley Schwarz - 12-string acoustic guitar, Rick Wakeman - piano, organ, Bob Andrews - organ, Bruce Thomas, Brian Odgers - basses, John Wilson, Roger Pope, Graham Hunt - drums, John Donnelly, Mick Welton, Kevin Powers - backing vocals. 01 - You Don't Even Know Me 02 - Amsterdam 03 - Songs Out Of Clay 04 - The News From Spain 05 - I Don't Believe You 06 - Once An Orange, Always An Orange 07 - I'm Falling 08 - Night Of The 4Th Of May LINK (RS) or LINK (FS)
Sammy were a short lived supergroup featuring ex-members of Audience, Quatermass, The Herd, Silverhead, Episode Six and Ginhouse. Sporting a brass driven hard rock sound, the band released their sole album in 1972 to an apathetic record buying public. Though the band toured relentlessly for two years, their efforts were not met with success and the band folded by the end of 1974. In retrospect, this was a stellar effort despite the two pointless prog interludes that are featured here. At times the band sounded a bit like Audience and there were elements of Deep Purple scattered throughout. This isn't a surprise, considering the album was produced by Ian Gillan. In fact, drummer Mick Underwood would later join Gillan's solo project for a number of years. He would also form Strapps and a revamped Quatermass in the 90's.(RFR)

Gary Lee Yoder is a musician who was part of several 1960s San Francisco psychedelic rock bands, including Kak, Oxford Circle, and Blue Cheer. Oxford Circle (formed in 1966) and Kak (formed in 1968) were both formed in Yoder's hometown of Davis, California, and featured the same nucleus of members. While Oxford Circle frequently shared the stage with greats such as the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, and Janis Joplin, they did not achieve the same level of fame and never got a record deal. Kak would release only one record in 1969, entitled Kak, which has become a collector's item. I'm Gonna Be a Country Girl Again was the fifth album by Native American singer/songwriter Buffy Sainte-Marie. As its title suggested, it saw her, again following Joan Baez, embrace Nashville country music with the help of session veterans such as the Jordanaires, Grady Martin, Roy M. Huskey, "Junior" and Floyd Cramer. The album included re-recordings of "Now That the Buffalo's Gone" and "The Piney Wood Hills" from her first and second albums respectively. "Tall Trees in Georgia", in contrast to most of the material, showed Sainte-Marie performing in a style reminiscent of her earliest work. I'm Gonna Be a Country Girl Again was not as well received critically or even commercially as her previous four albums, and relatively few of the songs unique to it have notable cover versions (Neko Case's cover of "Soulful Shade of Blue" may be considered an exception). The title tune, however, was to become a minor UK hit after she reached the Top Ten there with the title tune to the movie Soldier Blue (from her album She Used to Wanna Be a Ballerina). 01 - I'm Gonna Be A Country Girl Again 02 - He's A Pretty Good Man If You Ask Me 03 - Uncle Joe 04 - A Soulful Shade Of Blue 05 - From The Bottom Of My Heart 06 - Sometimes When I Get To Thinkin' 07 - The Piney Wood Hills 08 - Now That The Buffalo's Gone 09 - They Gotta Quit Kickin' My Dawg Around 10 - Tall Trees In Georgia 11 - The Love Of A Good Man 12 - Take My Hand For Awhile 13 - Gonna Feel Much Better When You're Gone LINK (RS) or LINK (FS)
Canned Heat is a blues-rock/boogie rock band that formed in Los Angeles, California, USA, in 1965. The group has been noted for its own interpretations of blues material as well as for efforts to promote the interest in this type of music and its original artists. It was launched by two blues enthusiasts, Alan Wilson and Bob Hite, who took the name from Tommy Johnson's 1928 "Canned Heat Blues", a song about an alcoholic who had desperately turned to drinking Sterno, generically called "canned heat". After appearances at Monterey and Woodstock, at the end of the 1960s the band acquired worldwide fame with a lineup consisting of Bob Hite, vocals, Alan Wilson guitar, harmonica and vocals, Henry Vestine (or Harvey Mandel) on lead guitar, Larry Taylor on bass, and Adolfo "Fito" de la Parra on drums. Canned Heat is the 1967 debut album by the band. It was released shortly after their appearance at the Monterey Pop Festival, and features performances of several blues covers. 01 - Rollin' And Tumblin'.mp3 02 - Bullfrog Blues.mp3 03 - Evil Is Going On.mp3 04 - Going Down Slow.mp3 05 - Catfish Blues.mp3 06 - Dust My Broom.mp3 07 - Help Me.mp3 08 - Big Road Blues.mp3 09 - Story Of My Life.mp3 10 - The Road Song.mp3 11 - Rich Woman.mp3 LINK (RS) or LINK (FS)
Zephyr was a blues-based hard rock band formed in 1969 in Boulder, Colorado by guitarist Tommy Bolin, keyboardist John Faris, David Givens on bass guitar, Robbie Chamberlin on drums and Candy Givens on vocals. Although the charismatic performances by Candy Givens were originally the focal point for the band, it was the flashy guitar work of Tommy Bolin that the band is best remembered for. After Bolin left, he was replaced by Jock Bartley, and the band recorded the album Sunset Ride, their second for Warner Brothers Records. The album is still in print and is much loved by a small but loyal following. On Sunset Ride, Candy Givens displayed her gifts as a singer, composer, and harmonica player. The album was produced by David Givens who also authored the majority of the tunes. As a result of his stint with Zephyr, Bartley went on to a successful career with Gram Parsons and Firefall and drummer, Michael Wooten, went on to play for several years with Carole King. Various versions of Zephyr continued to play in Colorado until Candy's death in 1984. The release of "Heartbeat" in 1982 was promoted by a video that incorporated very early examples of analog computer animation combined with live action. Aphrodite's Child was a Greek progressive rock band formed in 1967, by Vangelis Papathanassiou (keyboards), Demis Roussos (bass guitar and vocals), Loukas Sideras (drums and vocals), and Anargyros "Silver" Koulouris (guitar). Their band's name was derived from the title of a track from another Mercury act, Dick Campbell, from his Sings Where It's At album. Papathanassiou and Roussos had already been successful in Greece while they got together with Sideras and Koulouris to form a new band. Their first recording as a band was for George Romanos' album In Concert and in Studio where they played on four songs and were credited as 'Vangelis and his Orchestra'. In the same year they recorded a two song demo and submitted it to Philips Records. It was probably Vangelis'idea that the still-anonymous band should be relocated in London which would be a more suitable environment for their music. This decision, however, was not problem-free. Koulouris had to stay in Greece to fulfill his military service while the band, on their way to London, got stuck in Paris partially because they did not have the correct work permits and partially because of the strikes associated with the May 1968 events. In Paris they signed to Mercury Records, christened "Aphrodite's Child" and released their first single "Rain and Tears", a reworking of Pachelbel's Canon in D major. With this song the band became an overnight sensation in France and several other European countries in which the single charted well, despite the song being sung in English and not French. It sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc. In October of the same year, the band released their first album End of the World. The album contained an equal amount of psychedelic pop songs and ballads in the vein of Procol Harum or The Moody Blues. 01 - End Of The World 02 - Aphrodite's Child , Don't Try To Catch The River 03 - Mister Thomas 04 - Rain And Tears 05 - The Graas Is No Green 06 - Valley Of Sadness 07 - You Always Stand In My Way 08 - The Shepherd And The Moon 09 - Day Of The Fool LINK (RS) or LINK (FS)
Earth and Fire were a progressive rock group formed in the Netherlands by brothers Chris and Gerard Koerts. Most popular in the 1970s, Earth and Fire came to produce many chart topping hits in the Dutch pop scene. Though they experienced success in the Netherlands, their music never quite made it to England or the Americas. Interesting record of the italian rock scene. In the 1976, when the progressive was ending, the Railroad recorded this album fully sung in english. Not acid rock blues neither virulent, but nice to hear it. It is not a covers record and all the tracks are composed by Jed Castellani - who plays guitar and harp - and by the rest of the band in which emerge Diego Chiuppani that gives us very good solos. Tamam Shud were an Australian psychedelic and progressive rock band, formed in Sydney in 1967, which released two albums, Evolution (1969) and Goolutionites and the Real People (1970) before disbanding in 1972. They reformed in 1993 to release a third album, Permanent Culture in 1994 but disbanded again in 1995. Tamam Shud evolved from the surf band, The Sunsets, in 1967 and was based on Sydney's northern beaches. The group released two acclaimed LPs, recorded independently, which have both become sought-after collector's items. Evolution from 1968, is the debut album of the band. The BBC Radio recordings that make up Something's Coming, taken from sources as varied as Top Gear and the Dave Lee Travis Show cover the period from January 1969 through to March 1970 and feature the original Yes line-up (as they appeared on the albums Yes and Time And A Word) of Jon Anderson (vocals), Chris Squire (bass), Tony Kaye (keyboards), Peter Banks (guitar) and Bill Bruford (drums). In the 1970s, these classical-inclined behemoths pushed the boundaries of rock--too far, some said--but Yes actually began life in 1968 as a harmony-favouring covers band with a brave new progressive jazz-rock direction. Covers band? Well, this being Yes, covers meant vaingloriously dextrous assaults on the likes of Lennon and McCartney's "Every Little Thing" and--on the b-side of their first single--Leonard Bernstein's "Something's Coming", the Top Gear version of which commences with--what else--a drum solo.(Amazon UK) Disc 1 01 - Something's Coming 02 - Everydays 03 - Sweetness 04 - Dear Father 05 - Every Little Thing 06 - Looking Around 07 - Sweet Dreams 08 - Then 09 - No Opportunity Necessary, No Experience Required Disc 2 01 - Astral Traveller 02 - Then 03 - Every Little Thing 04 - Everydays 05 - For Everyone 06 - (Intro) Sweetness 07 - Something's Coming 08 - Sweet Dreams 09 - Beyond And Before LINK (RS) or LINK (FS)
Widely cited as one of the most important private press releases in all 1970s psychedelia, D.R. Hooker's The Truth might actually be one of those obscure lost gems that's worth the customarily inordinate amount of interest such period pieces are afforded. D.R. Hooker was a man slightly askew with his time: from the robes he wears on the cover to the quasi mystical lyrics, he's very much connected to the hippy era, and given that this album was recorded in 1972, in a time post-Charles Manson, he was brave to associate so strongly with all the imagery pertaining to cults. Musically, Hooker looks beyond the parameters of the hippy movement, dipping into a more ambitiously studio-oriented sound than Hooker's half-troubadour, half-prophet image on the sleeve might suggest. The noisy, fuzzy elements are particularly effective, and surprisingly intricate in their arrangement and recording.(TMB) D.R. Hooker (vocals, guitar), Vincent de Paul Linus Pasternack (guitar), George Sheck (bass), Nick Oliva (keyboards), Tom Kobela (dobro), Rick Sanders (syntheziser), Art Ryerson (electric piano, background vocals), Haywood Sheck (drums), Ken Lovelett (percussion, vibes), Carroll Yanni (lead guitar), Bert McDevitt (drums), Bob Reardon (keyboards), Steve Malkan (bass). 01 - The Sea 02 - Fall In Love 03 - A Stranger's Smile 04 - Weather Girl 05 - This Thing 06 - Forge Your Own Chains 07 - I'm Leaving You 08 - The Truth 09 - The Bible 10 - Falling Asleep 11 - Hello (Bonus) 12 - This Moment (Bonus) 13 - Free (Bonus) 14 - Winter (Bonus) 15 - A Tormented Heart (Bonus) 16 - Kamala (Bonus) LINK (RS) or LINK (FS)
Knowing that people/labels did not know what to do with this album is an understatement. Even for a listener after having read the liner notes first, the description in the booklet notes gives a very confusing idea of the album at a first listen. After having read "One of the most unconventional records ever recorded. This avant-garde psychedelic suite…” which for the first 5 tracks at that point this still sounds completely irrelevant, even nonsense, while after that the music more and more builds up, for an English album, into rather unconventional and original ideas. Even when similar experiments were happening more often in those days (in a similar way more likely in France for instance where avant-garde and ‘musique concrete’ was normal in mixing with rock now and then), the whole context and the abstract shapes mixed with a avant-rock opera idea, the album will in the end evolve to something rather unique. "Many years ago, no doubt in the dead of night, some intrepid freak climbed fly-like up the walls of the defunct International Film Theatre in Westbourne Grove and pasted up a poster which read "Mouseproof Is Music". Many times did I gaze fixidly from the top of a number 15 bus at the mysterious cat wearing shades, peering through the bars in the poster. And now the mystery is perceived; Mouseproof is an album by ace alchemist and cat-handler Gerry Fitzgerald, featuring some very notable little riffs by such famed performers as Lady June Campbell-Cramer on Etheopian Nose Harmonium and Cochise Brian Cole on Electric Hair slide and coal scuttle. Listening to Mouseproof the first time it's very easy to recognise traces of Zappa, Dylan, Bonzo Dog, Tod Dockstader and Capt. Beefheart." This album was recorded with help from Rod Herman (guitar), Alan Place (guitar), B.J. US Psychedelic Rock band. J.F. Murphy & Salt made a huge impact in late 60s and early 70s rock, forming a New York band that achieved cult-like status. Part of the hippie/psychedelic movement, J.F. Q65 are a Dutch Pop/Rock/Rhythm and Blues group formed in 1965 and categorised in the Netherlands as being part of the Nederbeat genre. Q65 was formed in early 1965 when guitarists Joop Roelofs and Frank Nuyens decide to start a band with singer Willem Bieler. The line-up was completed by bass player Peter Vink and drummer Jay Baar. The band was inspired by Rhythm and Blues traditionals and the songs of Robert Johnson and Willie Dixon as well as The Kinks, The Animals and The Rolling Stones. Q65 started their performances in the Spring of 1965. Due to drug problems and military service duties of singer Wim Bieler, Q65 disbanded in 1968. Q65 reformed in 1970 with different line-up. U.S. Apple Corps was an American Christian Hard/Blues/Psych Rock band. A new male singer takes over most of the lead vocals, pouring it on with a fervency equal to his female predecessor. And while their debut was strictly standards, Let The Music Take Your Mind is comprised mostly of original material. The music is both heavier and more diverse, including some blues-rock moves on the gospelly ‘That’s What My Man Is For’ and the throbbing slow burner ‘Closer To The Man’.
