Little Wheel Spin and Spin was the third album by Buffy Sainte-Marie, released in 1966. Although it became her only album to (albeit briefly) reach the Billboard Top 100, it failed to provide any notable standards covered by pop artists. Its most famous song is the epic "My Country 'Tis of Thy People You're Dying", which displayed a native perspective on the colonisation of North America. In contrast to her first two albums which were entirely acoustic with occasional use of her distinctive mouthbow, parts of Little Wheel Spin and Spin added electric guitar by Bruce Langhorne, string arrangements by Felix Pappalardi or feature fellow Native American performer Patrick Sky on guitar with Sainte-Marie. This served to pave the way for Sainte-Marie's stylistic experiments on her remaining Vanguard albums, where she covered territory ranging from country to rock to experimental music.01 - Little Wheel Spin And Spin02 - House Carpenter03 - Waly, Waly04 - Rolling Log Blues05 - My Country 'tis Of Thy People06 - Men Of The Fields07 - Timeless Love08 - Sir Patrick Spens09 - Poor Man's Daughter10 - Lady Margaret11 - Sometimes When I Get To Thinki12 - Winter BoyLINK

The GTO's were a "groupie group" that consisted of Miss Pamela (Pamela Ann Miller, later Pamela Des Barres), Miss Sparky (Linda Sue Parker), Miss Lucy (Lucy Offerall, later Lucy McLaren), Miss Christine (Christine Frka), Miss Sandra (Sandra Lynn Rowe, later Sandra Leano), Miss Mercy (Mercy Fontentot, aka Judith Edra Peters) and Miss Cynderella (Cynthia Wells, later Cynthia Cale-Binion). The group hailed from the area around Los Angeles in the late 1960s, with most of the girls being denizens of the Sunset Strip scene. Originally known as "The Laurel Canyon Ballet Company," they changed their name to The GTO's on the advice of Frank Zappa, their financial supporter and producer. The new name is an acronym which, as Stanley Booth wrote, could mean "Girls Together Outrageously or Orally or anything else starting with O." Their only album, Permanent Damage, was released in 1969. 01 - The Eureka Springs Garbage Lady02 - Miss Pamela And Miss Sparky Discuss Stuffed Bras And Some Of Their Early Gym Class Experiences03 - Who's Jim Sox04 - Kansas And The Bto's05 - The Captain's Fat Theresa Shoes06 - Wouldn't It Be Sad If There Were No Cones07 - Do Me In Once And I'll Be Sad, Do Me In Twice And I'll Know Better (Circular Circulation)08 - The Moche Monster Review09 - Tv Lives10 - Rodney11 - I Have A Paintbrush In My Hand To Color A Triangle12 - Miss Christine's First Conversation With The Plaster Casters Of Chicago13 - The Original Gto's14 - The Ghost Chained To The Past, Present, And Future (Shock Treatment)15 - Love On An Eleven Year Old Level16 - Miss Pamela's First Conversation With The Plaster Casters Of Chicago17 - I'm In Love With The Ooo-Ooo ManLINK

Pete Zorn is an American multi-instrumentalist who has played with some of the biggest names in roots music. He is currently most famous for providing live backing for Richard Thompson and his band, where he switches between acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass, mandolin, Tenor, Baritone and Sopranino saxophone, flute, tin whistle and vocals at various points during the set. Although he frequently tours with Thompson, Zorn has also played with many other singers and groups including Arizona Smoke Review formed by older brother Bill Zorn, Show of Hands, the Phil Beer Band, Elaine Paige, Thomas Anders, Barbara Dickson and his band WAZ which currently features folk legend Steve Tilston. He also appeared in the UK Top 10 in 1979 as part of Driver 67 with his brother in law, Paul Phillips on the single, "Car 67". He and Phillips met when Zorn came to London with Fishbaugh, Fishbaugh and Zorn, a three-piece folk rock band signed to CBS Records in London. Because of his talent on so many instruments and a remarkable vocal range, Zorn became a staple of many sessions produced by Phillips in the early and mid-Seventies. After the hit with Car 67, they made an album called Hey Mister Record Man, under the name Tax Loss. The Yardbirds are an English rock band that had a string of hits in the mid 1960s, including "For Your Love", "Over Under Sideways Down" and "Heart Full of Soul". The group is notable for having started the careers of three of rock's most famous guitarists: Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, and Jimmy Page, all of whom were in the top fifteen of Rolling Stone's 100 Top Guitarists list (Clapton as #4, Page as #9, and Beck as #14). A blues-based band that broadened its range into pop and rock, The Yardbirds were pioneers in guitar innovations of the '60s: fuzz tone, feedback, distortion, backwards echo, improved amplification, etc. Pat Pemberton, writing for Spinner, holds that the Yardbirds were "the most impressive guitar band in rock music". Bit a Sweet was reportedly a top draw at the big discotheques in New York City. Their only album, Hypnotic -- released by ABC in 1968 -- is a rare, and often over-looked, high-concept pop-psych album of the first degree. Today it is highly praised by collectors who are interested in psych-pop production values (phased vocals, electric sitar, strings, fuzz guitar). Bit a Sweet was produced by the multi-talented Steve Duboff, who also wrote most of the group's material, including both sides of their heavily edited "2086"/"Second Time" single. Duboff's sometime songwriting partner on this album, incidentally, was Artie Kornfeld, who -- during this time -- was producing the Cowsills for Mercury; their "How Can I Make You See" also appears here. Another highlights include Bit a Sweet's version of the George Harrison-penned Beatle track "If I Needed Someone." (Incidentally, Kornfeld and Duboff also recorded under the moniker Changin' Times). In February 1967, a year prior to the release of this album, Bit a Sweet covered the Steve Duboff-Dave Morris-penned "Out of Sight, Out of Mind," which was released on MGM (cover versions were also waxed by the Marauders and Limey & the Yanks). This song -- which unfortunately isn't featured on their debut -- is probably the group's best-known song. If you're curious, you can see it performed, along with one other selection, during the first few minutes of the sexploitation flick Blonde on a Bum Trip, and can also be found on several psychedelic compilations . Drummer Russell Leslie later recorded with a band called Neon (produced by Tommy James) and became a session drummer.(AMG)01 - Speak Softly02 - 208603 - If I Needed Someone04 - With Love05 - Monday-Tuesday06 - Diamonds Studded Eyes07 - How Can I Make You See08 - Travel09 - A Second TimeLINK

Stud is a British rock band from the early 1970s, that featured two members of Taste - bassist Charlie McCracken and drummer John Wilson, along with two members of Family - former bass guitarist John Weider and future bass player, Jim Cregan. Never a very commercially successful band, Stud had its biggest successes in Germany. A bit of a halfway house or rest stop, the short-lived Stud provided a brief but welcome respite for a group of musicians at loose ends. Bassist Richard McCracken and drummer John Wilson were at a loss when Rory Gallagher pulled the plug on Taste and launched his solo career. Guitarist Jim Cregan was similarly undecided what to do after leaving Blossom Toes. All three wanted to move in a new direction, but as their 1971 eponymous debut album proved, they weren't quite sure where they wanted to go, nor quite ready to leave their pasts behind.(AMG) 01 - Sail On02 - Turn Over The Pages03 - 111223504 - Harpo´s Head05 - Horizon (For Piet)06 - SongLINK

Beat music, British beat, Mersey sound or Merseybeat (for bands from Liverpool beside the River Mersey), is a rock music genre that developed in the United Kingdom in the early 1960s. Beat music is a fusion of rock and roll, doo wop, skiffle, R&B and soul. The beat movement provided most of the bands responsible for the British invasion of the American pop charts in the period after 1964, and provided the model for many important developments in pop and rock music. Beat groups characteristically had simple guitar-dominated line-ups, with vocal harmonies and catchy tunes. The most common instrumentation of beat groups featured lead, rhythm and bass guitars plus drums, as popularized by The Beatles, The Searchers, Gerry & The Pacemakers and others. Beat groups—even those with a separate lead singer—often sang both verses and choruses in close harmony, resembling doo wop, with nonsense syllables in the backing vocals. The most distinctive characteristic of the music was the strong beat, using the backbeat common to rock and roll and rhythm and blues, but often with a driving emphasis on all the beats of 4/4 bar. By 1966 beat music was beginning to sound out of date, particularly compared with "harder edged" blues rock and was beginning to emerge. Most of the groups that had not already disbanded moved, like The Beatles, into different forms of rock music and pop music, including psychedelic rock and eventually progressive rock.Vol. 101 - The Cheetans - It is not hard to figure out why record labels wouldn't touch Big Lost Rainbow and why it stood no chance of gaining a widespread audience at the time of its 1973 release date. The album runs completely counter to the pompous hard rock that was plastered all over the airwaves at the time and is far too subtle and mature for mass consumption. Although their initial gig was played before a crowd of 10,000, Big Lost Rainbow were not cut out for the arena. Their music requires a much more intimate setting and response, and their sole album is a surprising musical delight constructed out of elements of folk, jazz, and classical music, all of which expose gorgeous, supple melodies, mostly composed by lead vocalist and guitarist Ridley Pearson. The album brings to mind the best aspects of soft early '70s folk-pop, but unlike much of that genre, there is a genuine sorrow (as opposed to anger) threaded throughout the music; a sorrow, perhaps, brought about by the changing times but one that is not the least bit cynical. It is, instead, a sort of celebratory sentimentality. The songs are all exceedingly strong. Big Lost Rainbow infuse the music with an uncanny emotional resonance whether they are expressing joyous or melancholy sentiments. The opening cut, "Sail" (written by Otis Read), is powered by harmonies nearly equal to those of Crosby, Stills & Nash, while "Oh! Idaho" is a lilting, upbeat tune that soars with scatty harmonies a la Seals & Crofts. Even the upbeat songs, though, are not exactly bouncy. The album is entirely drum-less, so acoustic guitar, piano, bass, and cello are all up front with Pearson's vocals, which sound like a gentler, more somnolent Jonathan Edwards or James Taylor. When the mood is slowed down, the songs are incredibly touching. "Slow Rider" has a hint of the Bee Gees in their most heartbreakingly fragile and evocative melodic moments. And the gorgeous "Allegiance of Apathy," the one song included from the group's 1992 reunion, offers not only evidence that the members still have the magic but also a perfect, poignant closing for the album. Overall there is a tender, communal hippie vibe to the album, very sunny and optimistic without descending into silliness and entirely avoiding jadedness. There is a sense of lost innocence and the process of growing wiser, as if the band is singing a lullaby to the wistfulness of youth. From beginning to end, Big Lost Rainbow is romantic and lovely.(AMG)01 - Sail02 - I Go Alone03 - Lady Love04 - Brothers Of The Future05 - Ocean06 - Oh! Bangor Flying Circus was a progressive rock trio from Chicago, USA, formed in mid-1967 and breaking up in 1969. It is notable for being formed by members of the Shadows of Knight and H.P. Lovecraft and for being a predecessor band to Madura. Bangor Flying Circus consisted of David "Hawk" Wolinski (bass, keyboards, vocals), Alan DeCarlo (guitar, vocals), and Tom Schiffour (drums), who was replaced in late 1968 by former H.P. Lovecraft member Michael Tegza (drums, percussion). Wolinski and Schiffour had previously been in the Shadows of Knight. They put out one self-titled album in 1969, which peaked at No. 190 on The Billboard 200.After they broke up, Wolinski and DeCarlo formed Madura, while Tegza participated in two reconfigurations of Lovecraft, a successor band to H.P. Middle of the Road are a Scottish pop group who enjoyed success across Europe and Latin America in the early 1970s. Three of their singles sold over one million copies each, and received a gold disc. The tracks were "Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep" (which went on to sell over 10 million), "Tweedle Dee, Tweedle Dum" and "Soley Soley". By early 1972 alone the group had sold over five million records. Lead singer Sally Carr, drummer Ken Andrew, guitarist Ian McCredie and his bassist brother Eric McCredie, founded the band on 1 April 1970. They already played together under the name Part Four since 1967 and later in Latin American style under the name Los Caracas. They moved to Italy in 1970 because they had not found success in the United Kingdom. Rare Earth is an American rock band affiliated with Motown's Rare Earth record label (which was named after the band), who prospered in 1970-1972. Although not the first white band signed to Motown, Rare Earth was the first big hit-making act signed by Motown that consisted only of white members. (The Rustix were signed before them and were an all white act, but did not have any hits). One World is the fourth studio album by Rare Earth and was released in June 1971. Rare Earth was on an incredible hot streak from 1970 - 72. Once again, "I Just Want to Celebrate" became a Top 10 Gold certified hit. "One World", the album would become the 3rd and final Gold album from the ensemble. Those hits over the first 3 years of the decade insured that the band can still tour today, albeit on the oldies circuit. But Rare Earth made their mark.01 - What'd I Say02 - If I Die03 - The Seed04 - I Just Want To Celebrate05 - Someone To Love06 - Any Man Can Be A Fool07 - The Road08 - Under God's Light09 - Child Of Fortune One World10 - Hey Big Brother11 - King Of A Rainy CountryLINK
