Thomas & Richard Frost were a talented duo who were involved in some of the most intriguing late 1960s rock groups coming out of California. I first heard them play in one of the best American mod-influenced groups called Powder in the mid-60s. After Powder fizzled and a short stint in Sonny & Cher's touring band, Thomas & Richard Frost tried their hand at the soft rock sound, inspired by how folk rock heroes like Donovan had gone twee pop.

Breathtaking vocal harmonies and subtle flourishes of pop-psychedelia make the Groop's only album a perfect snapshot of the late-'60s Los Angeles scene. The Fun And Games evolved out a Houston, Texas group, the Six Pents. Several members -- Rock Romano, Mike Cemo, Paul Guillet, and John T. Bonno -- had played together in a high school band before joining forces with Richard Bain, D.J. Greer, Sam Irwin and Carson Graham. In 1964-1965, they became the house band at Houston's La Maison club, and recorded at Andrus Studios in Houston. After their first single, the Six Pents became The Sixpentz, and signed with Mainstream Records. The Sixpentz released two singles on Brent, a subsidiary of Mainstream. Eventually, the Sixpentz learned there was already a band called Sixpence, so, to avoid future confusion, they decided another name change was due, and became the Fun And Games Commission. Their first single -- "Someone Must Have Lied" -- was issued under this name before the group finally decided to shorten their name to the Fun And Games.

Sagittarius was a late-60s studio group devised by producer and songwriter Gary Usher. The project was conceived purely as a studio group, and California pals like Glen Campbell and Beach Boy Bruce Johnston were brought in to work on "Present Tense". The result is a marriage of pure pop, psychedelia and experimentalism. When there was pressure from Columbia for the group to tour, it was revealed that a group didn't exist.

Sir Lord Baltimore are a pioneering American heavy metal band from Brooklyn, New York, formed in 1968 by lead vocalist/drummer John Garner, guitarist Louis Dambra, and bass player Gary Justin. They are notable for the fact that a 1971 review of their debut record, Kingdom Come, contained the first documented use of the term "heavy metal" to refer to a style of music. Additionally, Sir Lord Baltimore featured a drumming lead singer, traditionally a rarity in rock and metal music. The group have been called "the godfathers of stoner rock."
