One of Chicago’s great underground bands. Mountain Bus were frequently cited as Chicago’s answer to the Grateful Dead, and indeed some of their songs on the above album sound like San Fransisco’s most cherished sons. The fiasco of the lawsuit against Mountain Bus and Good Records by the people who represented Mountain really obscures the fact that the band created some fabulous, atmospheric and ambient music that at times bears a striking resemblence to the music being created by the Grateful Dead during the same period. Nothing, however, can obscure excellent songs, and Sundance is full of them. (part - Stanton Swihart, All Music Guide)

Primevil was a short-lived hard rock combo from Indiana, comprised of vocalist Dave Campton, guitarists Larry Lucas and Jay Wilfong, bassist Mark Sipe, and drummer Mel Cupp (Moe Whittemore contributed synthesizers in the studio) -- most of whom were barely out of their teens when they recorded their sole long-player, Smokin' Bats at Campton's, in 1974.Produced at Moe Whittemore's 700 West studio, Primevil's Smokin' Bats at Comptons, is one of the heavy rock monsters of the Midwest. 01 - Leavin' 02 - Progress 03 - Fantasies 04 - Pretty Woman 05 - Tell Me If You Can 06 - Hey, Lover 07 - High Steppin' Stomper 08 - Your Blues LINK
Refugee was a progressive rock group formed by former The Nice members, bassist Lee Jackson and drummer Brian Davison, with keyboardist Patrick Moraz. After The Nice, Jackson had formed Jackson Heights, with Davison later becoming involved in the project too. Jackson then invited Moraz to form a new trio, Refugee, with him and Davison and following the same keys/bass/drums format as The Nice had. Refugee released one album on Charisma Records. The music was composed by Moraz with lyrics from Jackson. Without a deal for a second album and with tensions in the band, Moraz accepted an offer to join Yes in 1974 and, after a final few shows, Refugee split up. 01 - Papillon 02 - Someday 03 - Grand Canyon Suite 04 - Ritt Mickley 05 - Credo LINK

Pickettywitch was a British pop group. The original members were Polly Brown (vocals), Chris Warren (vocals), Bob Brittain (organ), Martin Bridges (guitar), Mike Tomich (bass guitar) and Keith Hall (drums). Bridges and Tomich were replaced later in 1970 by Peter Hawkins (guitar) and Brian Stuart (bass), who would later be replaced by Paul Risi (guitar) and Paul Riordan (bass). The name Pickettywitch is often said to have been taken from a Cornish village through which their eventual lead singer, Polly Brown, had passed with her sister; in fact, there is no such village, though there is a pub of that name at Yeovil in Somerset. Pickettywitch was signed by record producer John Macleod to Pye Records and released their debut single, "You've Got Me So I Don't Know" b/w "Solomon Grundy" in July 1969.Two further singles also made the UK chart in that year - these were "(It's Like A) Sad Old Kinda Movie" (again written by Macaulay and Mcleod) (#16), and "Baby I Won't Let You Down" (written by Les Reed and Geoff Stephens) (#27).In 1970, "Days I Remember" was received radio airplay. The single did not appear on record charts, but "That Same Old Feeling" reached #67 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the summer of that same year. Brown left for a solo career in late 1972. 01 You Got Me So I Don't Know 02 Solomon Grundy 03 That Same Old Feeling 04 Maybe We've Been Loving Too Long 05 (It's Like A) Sad Old Kinda Movie 06 Times 07 Baby I Won't Let You Down 08 Please Bring Her Back Home 09 Take Away the Emptiness Too 10 Then It Will Be 11 Shame Shame 12 Sound of Silence 13 I'll Say Bye Bye 14 Days I Remember 15 Two Hearts Are Better Than One 16 There He Goes 17 This Day 18 Waldo P. Fairfield Parlour were an English progressive rock band that recorded in the late 1960s into the early 1970s. After the psychedelic rock group Kaleidoscope moved further into progressive rock, and also to avoid confusion with the American group Kaleidoscope, they renamed themselves Fairfield Parlour. The members were Peter Daltrey (vocals, keyboards), Eddy Pumer (guitars), Steve Clark (bass, flute) and Dan Bridgman (drums). The band released several singles and one critically acclaimed full album, From Home to Home, which is now considered a classic.

Pittsburgh power trio Fresh Blueberry Pancake formed in 1968, comprising singer/bassist Tony Impavido, guitarist John Behrens, and drummer Geoff Rydell. After two years of local gigging, the group built up enough of a fan base and enough original material to record a demo tape, and in 1970 they self-released Heavy, issued in a pressing of just 54 copies, the record is now much sought-after among collectors of plodding, monolithic acid rock. (The Shadoks label reissued Heavy in 2003.) After the album's release the group abbreviated its name to Pancake, dissolving in 1972. (Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide)

In April 1960 during the school vacation Paul borrowed a neighbour's tape recorder to record the then-called "Beatals" in his family home at No.20 Forthlin Road in Liverpool. In 1961 different tapes from these sessions were given to their friends in Hamburg, Hans Walther Braun and Astrid Kirchherr. In the late 70's Frank Dostal borrowed both original tapes and spliced them together in the Teldec studio on Heussweg is Hamburg. He made three copies, one for Hans Walther Braun, one for Astrid Kirchherr and one for himself. In April 1988 some tracks of one of these copies were released on the German LP "The Quarrymen At Home". Soon later most of the other tracks were released on a Dutch double LP called "John, Paul, George and Stu - Liverpool May 1960". The final missing vocal track "The World Is Waiting For The Sunrise" finally made it on Belmo's "Happy Christmas" single in 1991. All future CD releases were lifted from these sets which unfortunately were heavily compressed and edited. Even the official "Anthology Vol.1" double CD has the reverb and echo that was added to the tape in 1988! So it's not copied from the source tape but from the vinyl bootleg. For the first time now you have the chance to listen to the material lifted from the original source tape. To be honest, there are still some little snippets missing but many tracks are one or two seconds longer than on any previous release and one song for the first time ever could be heard in it's entirely: "Well Darling" on all previous releases was shortened from the original 5'06" to about 2'30" or 3'30". Here it is in full length without any fades or edits!

Around October of 1965, a small label called Savage Records released an album of Sheridan material. Where Savage got the songs to use on the album is not known. My theory is this: an album called The Beatles First had been issued in Germany in April of 1964, containing much of the same lineup as The Savage Young Beatles. Bootleggers in New York bought a copy of the record, and some time later -- with MGM's "My Bonnie" and Atco's "Ain't She Sweet" having hit the charts -- they decided to pirate the German Polydor album. Apparently in order to avoid possible lawsuits, they removed three of the four sides of the MGM and Atco hit singles from the album, reducing it to eight songs. The Savage album, appropriately named The Savage Young Beatles, contained four of the Sheridan/Beatles tracks and four songs by Tony Sheridan. The front cover deceptively shows the group without Tony and mentions Tony's name (on the front cover) only at the bottom, as though "T. Sheridan" were one of the songs. To its credit, however, the proper lineup of the Beatles (with Pete Best) was shown on the cover -- rather than making it appear as though these were "new" releases.(Frank Daniels)

Recordings of The Beatles in BBC Radio and Radio Sweden auditions 63-65. About the name "Johnny and the Moondogs", by October 26, 1959, the group was streamlined to just John, Paul McCartney, and George Harrison, and the threesome decided to make a second go at Carroll Levis' TV show "Discoveries." They called themselves Johnny and the Moondogs just for these auditions, which they unfortunately failed. One can only wonder whether Johnny and the Moondogs might have become a household name if they had passed the audition!
