The Family That Plays Together, the second of four albums released by the original Spirit lineup, was marketed by Ode Records in 1968. Unlike its predecessor, Spirit, their self-titled and surreal debut, The Family That Plays Together evinces more greatly the band's ability for playing beyond the genre of psychedelic rock than within it. Tracks "It Shall Be" and "Silky Sam" demonstrate the ease with which the ensemble can incorporate jazz into their idiosyncratic form of rock, while "Jewish" and "Aren't You Glad" evidenced the band's competence in exploiting, to their advantage, both world music and jam rock respectively. "Poor Richard" and "Its All the Same" feature glorious double track lead breaks from guitarist California. The inspiration behind entitling The Family is alleged to have derived from the stepson-stepfather relationship guitarist Randy California and percussionist Ed Cassidy shared. 01 - I Got A Line On You 02 - It Shall Be 03 - Poor Richard 04 - Silky Sam 05 - Drunkard 06 - Darlin' If 07 - It's All The Same 08 - Jewish 09 - Dream Within A Dream 10 - She Smiles 11 - Aren't You Glad 12 - Fog 13 - So Little To Say 14 - Mellow Fellow 15 - Now Or Anywhere 16 - Space Chile LINK
This, the last album from the original lineup, is to me one of the the greatest albums ever made. It's got everything- fantastic songs-great production-competent and inspired musicians! The sound is more psychedelic with guitars zooming between the speakers and a lot of backwards tapes. The songwriting is more consistenly mature than on the previous albums. The album was initially a failure commercially, and this sadly led to the group breaking up. Ed Cassidy said in the Time Circle booklet: "There was frustration (...) we had had what we thought was going to be successful, and I think everybody started to think, 'Maybe it's not working. Maybe it's time to move on.' This was sort of like 'The last hurrah', so to speak, and I think that's one of the reasons why it became a classic album. It was advanced for it's times, doing a lot of things electronically that were not being done, and the arranging of songs and how we had initiated the blending of one song into another." 01 - Prelude - Nothin' To Hide 02 - Nature's Way 03 - Animal Zoo 04 - Love Has Found A Way 05 - Why Can't I Be Free 06 - Mr. Skin 07 - Space Child 08 - When I Touch You 09 - Street Worm 10 - Life Has Just Begun 11 - Morning Will Come 12 - Soldier LINK
Model Shop is a 2005 album by the Los Angeles group, Spirit, which collects the material they recorded in 1968, for the soundtrack to Jacques Demy's film Model Shop. Chronologically, the album's material falls in between their second and third albums, The Family That Plays Together (1968) and Clear (1969). For his film, director Jacques Demy wanted a band that captured the vibe of Los Angeles as he saw it. After hearing Spirit perform in an L.A. club, he decided that they would be the perfect group for his film's soundtrack. However, the film itself was considered a failure and no soundtrack album was released at the time. Most of the material remained unreleased until 2005, following the discovery of a master tape of the original mono mixes. Model Shop differs from other Spirit albums of the era, in that most of the songs were written collaboratively. Also, with the exception of "Now or Anywhere" and "Green Gorilla", the pieces are exclusively instrumental and hilight the Jazz leanings of the band. 01 - The Moving Van 02 - Mellow Fellow 03 - Now Or Anywhere 04 - Fog 05 - Green Gorilla 06 - Model Shop I 07 - Model Shop Ii (Clear) 08 - The Rehearsal Theme 09 - Song For Lola 10 - Eventide 11 - Coral 12 - Aren't You Glad LINK
The "Mercury years" of Spirit were not their early, formative years which were spent with CBS/Columbia. By 1975, the band had effectively ceased to exist. Randy California and Ed Cassidy however decided to give it another go. They resurrected the band name and self funded their comeback album "Spirit of '76", intended as part of the American bicentennial celebrations. Mercury Records picked up the band and further albums were recorded and released over the next couple of years. The Lovin' Spoonful is an American pop rock band of the 1960s, named to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000. When asked about his band, leader John Sebastian said it sounded like a combination of "Mississippi John Hurt and Chuck Berry. The band had its roots in the folk music scene based in the Greenwich Village section of lower Manhattan during the early 1960s. Sebastian, who grew up in contact with music and musicians, was the son of a much-recorded and highly technically accomplished classical harmonica player. He had reached maturity toward the end of the American folk music revival that spanned from the 1950s to the early '60s. Sebastian was joined in the Spoonful by guitarist Zal Yanovsky from a bohemian folk group called The Mugwumps, playing local coffee houses and small clubs (two other members, Cass Elliot and Denny Doherty, would later form half of the Mamas & the Papas.) Drummer-vocalist Joe Butler and bassist Steve Boone rounded out the group. The Chocolate Watch Band, was a psychedelic rock and garage rock band formed in San Jose, California in 1965. The band had finally broken up indefinitely by 1970 but then reunited in 1999 at a 66/99 show Mike Stax organized in San Diego. They continue to play today at garage rock shows in Europe as well as the States with Little Steven and the Electric Prunes. The band's music was largely described as a blend of 1960s-style garage rock with a distinguishable rolling San Francisco sound. The group's early music appeared to contain blues influences, and later it developed psychedelic elements through use of instrumental experimentation. Ed Cobb was well-known as their producer. The band also appeared in the 1967 film Riot on Sunset Strip and the 1968 film "The Love Ins". The Chocolate Watch Band's resurrected line-up (after their breakup in mid-1967) of Inner Mystique were: Sean Tolby, lead guitar, Bill 'Flo' Flores, bass, Tim Abbott, guitar, Mark Whittaker, drums and Chris Flinders, vocals.

Hearts & Flowers was a Los Angeles folk-rock club band, perhaps most significant as one of the groups that launched the career of Eagles' founding member and guitarist-songwriter, Bernie Leadon. The lineup included Larry Murray (vocals, guitar), Dave Dawson (vocals, guitar, autoharp) and Rick Cunha (vocals, guitar). Leadon replaced Cunha on their second album in 1968. Among venues they played during the mid-1960s, were Los Angeles clubs Ledbetter's, Doug Weston's Troubadour, and the Ashgrove. A mysterious figure of the late '60s who put out an interesting eponymous album on the names-can-be-deceptive Chartmaker label. With his funky, keyboard-based rock and full, soulful vocals, Darius sounded like a more eccentric and far moodier, doomier counterpart to Lee Michaels. The record was imaginatively arranged and produced, with flourishes of flamenco guitar, odd echo-tinkles, and some dynamic organ and bass hooks adding to its overall air of idiosyncrasy. It's little known, even among psychedelic collectors, and worthy of exhumation on CD reissue.(AMG) Bobby Joe Ott, from Cleveland, aka Darius, was based in Hollywood, California. Gerry & the Pacemakers are a British rock and roll group prominent during the 1960s. In common with The Beatles, they came from Liverpool and were managed by Brian Epstein. They are most remembered for being the first act to reach number one in the UK Singles Chart with their first three single releases. It was a record that was not equalled for 20 years, until the mid-80s success of fellow Liverpool band Frankie Goes to Hollywood. Gerry & the Pacemakers are the second most successful group from Liverpool to hit the US pop charts, behind only the Beatles.

The Band was an acclaimed and influential rock music group. The original group consisted of Canadians Rick Danko (bass guitar, double bass, fiddle, vocals), Garth Hudson (keyboard instruments, saxophone), Richard Manuel (piano, drums, vocals), Robbie Robertson (guitar, vocals), and American Levon Helm (drums, mandolin, guitar, vocals). All five members were notable musicians in their own right. The members of the Band first came together as they joined rockabilly singer Ronnie Hawkins' backing group, The Hawks, one by one between 1958 and 1963. Upon leaving Hawkins in 1964, they were known as The Levon Helm Sextet (the sixth member being sax player Jerry Penfound), then Levon and the Hawks (without Penfound). In 1965, they released a single on Ware Records under the name Canadian Squires, but returned as Levon and the Hawks for a recording session for Atco later in 1965. At about the same time, Bob Dylan recruited Helm and Robertson for two concerts, then the entire group for his U.S. tour in 1965 and world tour in 1966. They also joined him on the informal recordings that later became The Basement Tapes. Rock of Ages: The Band in Concert is The Band's fifth album. A live disc recorded during their series of shows at New York City's Academy of Music on December 28–31, 1971, it combines several of their hits with enthusiastic covers of songs originally performed by the likes of Marvin Gaye and Chuck Willis and features a wild organ improvisation by organist Garth Hudson, recorded as 1971 turned to 1972. Bob Dylan appeared on stage for the concert's final four songs, including a version of the rare song "When I Paint My Masterpiece". Nazz was a psychedelic and garage rock band from the 1960s. The band was formed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1967 by Todd Rundgren (lead guitar) and Carson Van Osten (bass guitar). Thom Mooney (drums, formerly of the Munchkins), and Robert "Stewkey" Antoni (vocals, keyboards) joined before their first concert, opening for the Doors in 1967. Nazz is the 1968 debut album by Nazz. Though sometimes mistakenly called "The Nazz", the group's official name on all records and press materials is simply, "Nazz", without the definite article. Nazz never became mainstream rock stars, but they did achieve a measure of cult popularity among some listeners, especially future glam rockers and power pop bands like David Bowie and Big Star, in whom Nazz's hard psychedelic influences can be heard. The song "Back of Your Mind" is considered an underground classic.
