The Beatles - 1964 - The Beatles And Jimmy Nicol

When Ringo Starr collapsed from tonsillitis early on jure 3, 1964, the day before The Beatles were to embark on the first leg of their summer world tour, Beatles manager Brian Epstein quickly decided to bring in a substitute drummer and continue with the tour (over George Harrison's objections). Producer George Martin suggested 24-year-old Cockney drummer Jimmy Nicol, who had played on a recent Georgie Fame and his Blue Flames session and also had played on a soundalike album of Beatles hits. Nicol auditioned rehearsed for a couple of hours that afternoon at Abbey Road with the other three Beatles and was hired. After arriving the next day in Copenhagen, where more rehearsals were held. Nicol debued with the band in concert that night From all reports, he was a fine fill-in on the drums, and while Nicol was self-conscious about not having much of a Beatle fringe (he used lotion to try to stimulate its growth while on tour with the group) the other Beatles included him in all of the group's public appearances and press conferences. After Copenhagen, Nicol played with The Beatles in Holland, Hong Kong and on the first four shows of the Australian tour, in Adelaide. When the band was rejoined by Starr in Melbourne, a historic five-Beatle press conference was held and then Nicol was sent home. (A poignant photo shows him sitting alone in the airport lounge waiting for his flight - just hours after he was part of some of the largest crowd scenes ever in Australia.)
