U.S. Apple Corps was an American Christian Hard/Blues/Psych Rock band. A new male singer takes over most of the lead vocals, pouring it on with a fervency equal to his female predecessor. And while their debut was strictly standards, Let The Music Take Your Mind is comprised mostly of original material. The music is both heavier and more diverse, including some blues-rock moves on the gospelly ‘That’s What My Man Is For’ and the throbbing slow burner ‘Closer To The Man’. The flames rage outta control on the Southern-styled ‘Dead’ featuring slamming triple guitar action. ‘Get High On Jesus’ was also covered on the mega-rare Earthen Vessel monster. Wild colorful psychedelic praying-hands-cross-Afro-head cover.(KS)

Magna Carta was a folk rock group originally formed in London on 10 May 1969, by Chris Simpson (guitar, vocals), Lyell Tranter (guitar, vocals) and Glen Stuart (vocals). Although never purely a folk band, they managed to successfully bridge the gap between folk and folk rock. The trio released albums for Fontana Records and Vertigo Records, enjoying particular success with 1970's Seasons before Tranter returned to Australia. Davey Johnstone joined the line-up as his replacement, recording Songs From Wasties Orchard and In Concert with the band before leaving to work with Elton John, with whom he is still playing. Davey Johnstone - vocals, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, mandolin, sitar, cymbals, harpsichord, Glenn Stuart - vocals, lyre, Chris Simpson - vocals, acoustic guitar, percussion, plus Nick Potter, Ron Chesterman - bass, Danny Thompson - double bass, Rick Wakeman - keyboards and Heather Corbett - percussion.

Paul Griggs is a British musician from St. Albans, Hertfordshire. He first played professionally in the band The Cortinas, formed in 1963. Cortinas released one unsuccessful single in 1968 and was renamed Octopus the same year. Octopus, which included Griggs' brother Nigel, supported many well-known groups including Cream and Yes and in 1970 released one LP, Restless Night and several singles. During its existence, Octopus had several members who later joined famous groups: Drummer Brian Glascock, John Cook and Tim Reeves of Mungo Jerry, and brother Nigel Griggs and Malcolm Green, both later of New Zealand group, Split Enz. According to the Nottinghan Post, "There was a point – when Octopus cut a single and album – when it looked like fame would be theirs ... but it didn't happen."

The Mindbenders (originally the backing group for Wayne Fontana) was a 1960s beat group from Manchester, England. They were part of the mid 1960s British Invasion with their chart-toppers "Game of Love" and "A Groovy Kind of Love". Wayne Fontana founded the band in 1963 with Bob Lang, Ric Rothwell, and Eric Stewart. The group was later joined by Grahame Foote. The name of the group was inspired by the title of a 1963 film, starring the British actor Sir Dirk Bogarde, called The Mind Benders. They released a few unsuccessful singles before recording "Um Um Um Um Um Um" in 1964, which was a major hit in Britain and led to a tour with Brenda Lee. They also had a #1 hit in the United States with "Game of Love". After a tour of America and some more unsuccessful singles, Fontana left the band in the middle of a concert in 1965. Stewart became the lead singer of the band, which also dropped 'Wayne Fontana' from its name. Bob Lang - Bass, Eric Stewart - Guitar / Lead Vocals, Ric Rothwell - Drums, Graham Gouldman - Bass, Paul Hancox- Drums, and Graham Foote - Guitar.

Talk about your mystery groups – despite 20 years of celebrity among psych fans and being on one of the most respected record labels in the world, no one seems to know much about the 5-man outfit known as the Common People. I used to think they were an Eastcoast band because that's what they sound like, but they were managed by Lord Tim Hudson of Seeds & Lollipop Shoppe infamy, and the 1969 album was apparently recorded in L A, so maybe they were westcoast after all. In any event, the LP is an interesting experience, far from perfect but with a bunch of strange twists and turns unusual for a major label artefact.(Choco). John Bartley (Guitar), Michael McCarthy (Bass), Danny Rebinett (Guitar), Danny Rebinett (Vocals), Jerrald Rebinett (Drums), produced by David Axelrod.

The Devil's Anvil was a hard rock/psychedelic band based out of New York City in the 1960's. They released on album entitled Hard Rock from the Middle East in 1967 showcasing a mix of 60's hard rock and psychedelic sound with Turkish, Arab vocals and traditional instrumentals. Their middle-eastern acid-rock was unique and bizarrely modern (it predates the British transglobal-dance bands by about 30 years). The fuzzed-out guitar mingled with oud, bouzouki, tamboura, Goblet drum. Instrumental in the band's formation was producer Felix Pappalardi, who helped sign them with Columbia Records. It was in 1966, while hanging out in the Village that he chanced upon a group of Middle Eastern-born or -descended musicians, playing at a coffee house called Feejon. Pappalardi began playing with them, and eventually they became the unofficial house band at Feejon -- the core members of the group, which took the name The Devil's Anvil, were Steve Knight (rhythm guitar, bass, bouzouki), Jerry Satpir (lead guitar, vocals), Elierzer Adoram (accordion), and Kareem Issaq (oud, vocals). Knight and Pappalardi developed a good working relationship, trading the bass and guitar spots during the recording of the group's one album, Hard Rock from the Middle East, which set the stage for their subsequent team-up together in Mountain. Unfortunately for The Devil's Anvil, their album was released during escalating tensions between Israel and neighboring Arab countries and the Six Day War, or the Arab-Israeli War, in 1967. Subsequently, radio stations would not touch the album because of its controversial sound.

The Motions from The Hague were one of the bigger groups of the 1960s Dutch beat explosion. They were formed in 1964 from the remnants of Ritchie Clark and the Ricochets and went on to become hitmakers for the next several years. From 1964 till 1967, the line-up remained the same: Rudy Bennett - lead vocals, guitars, Robbie Van Leeuwen - guitars, vocals, Henk Smitskamp - bass, vocals and Sieb Warner - drums, vocals. This line-up had a string of hits in The Netherlands during 1965 and 1966 with singles like "Wasted Words" and "It's The Same Old Song". Their first album, "Introduction To The Motions", is considered one of the best albums of the era.

The Earwigs become The Spiders in 1965. Musically, the group was inspired by artists such as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Kinks, and The Yardbirds. For the next year the band performed regularly around the Phoenix area with a huge black spider's web as their backdrop, the group's first stage prop. In 1965 they recorded their first single, "Why Don't You Love Me" (originally performed by The Blackwells), with Furnier learning the harmonica for that song. In 1966 "The Spiders" graduated from high school, and after North High School footballer, Michael Bruce, replaced John Tatum on rhythm guitar, the band scored a local #1 radio hit with "Don't Blow Your Mind," an original composition from their second single release. By 1967 the band had begun to make regular road trips to Los Angeles, California to play shows. In 1967 renamed themselves as The Nazz and released the single "Wonder Who's Lovin' Her Now," In 1968 upon learning that Todd Rundgren also had a band called Nazz, the band was again in need of another stage name. Believing that the group needed a gimmick to succeed, and that other bands were not exploiting the showmanship potential of the stage, Furnier chose "Alice Cooper" as the band's name. Vincent Furnier (Alice Cooper) - vocals, harmonica, Glen Buxton - lead guitar, Dennis Dunaway - bass, John Speer - drums and John Tatum - rhythm guitar ( Michael Bruce - rhythm guitar on track 03).

Produced by the legendary Tom Wilson when he launched his Raputin Productions in 1968 that included such bands as Fraternity Of Man, Ill Wind, and Bagattelle, this one somehow was lost in the shuffle, an obscure funky rockin' bluesy combo, with an integrated lineup, and instrumentation that includes organ, guitar, bass, and drums.  The tracks are all originals, with a funky feel to them, and some good grooves on the best tracks. The lead singer's in kind of an Eric Burdon mode, but on the groovers, this comes off as sort of a mod soul/beat group sound, which gives the  cuts a great A-Go-Go beat.(DG) John-John McDuffy (organ-piano-vocals), Fluffer Hirsch (guitar), Johnny Mitchell (alto sax-vocals), Sam Wright (bass), and "Chocolate" Wright (drums).

A very '65 Garage group hailing from New York City. Farfisa Organ driven sounds abound. Eight songs in all of their known recordings. Think The Castaways' 'Liar, Liar' mixed with some Frat-Rock for a good idea. 'Shed a tear' being a good example. Your typical 60's teenage ups & downs Boy/Girl song themes. The moody ballad, 'Please Don't Go' is pretty good and alternates its' slow/fast tempos back & forth well. The title track appears twice here, first as the band's only A-Side released single and secondly, as a similar sounding abet, a slightly slower early first version. Both are very typical but, very likeable 1965 Garage. It's B-side, Dylan's 'Like A Rolling Stone' (and featured on Pebbles Volume 1) is given the Farfisa driven treatment with upbeat harmony vocals working very well as a Garage tune. 'Satellite' is a pleasant sounding 'Telstar' like instrumental which, reminded me of music you would've heard played in a 60's roller rink. 'You can't have my woman' their first demo from late 1964 is an atypical mid-tempo Garage rocker yet, features more guitar than their later Farfisa lead stuff.

01 - That's Too Bad
02 - Like A Rolling Stone
03 - Shed A Tear
04 - Hard To Find
05 - Please Don't Go

The Ugly Ducklings were a five piece garage rock group based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, most notable during the mid 1960s. The group was formed in 1965 with Dave Bingham (lead vocals, harmonica), Glynn Bell (rhythm guitar), Roger Mayne (lead guitar), John Read (bass), and Robin Boers (drums). In their early days their music was partially influenced by The Who, The Rolling Stones, The Yardbirds and The Kinks, however the band was still able to create a rough individual sound typified by their solid garage-punk original material and raw delivery. They released six singles in 1966 and 1967 on the Yorktown and Yorkville labels, and one album, Somewhere Outside in 1967. In the summer and fall of 1967, the band's fifth single "Gaslight" became a Top 40 hit across Canada, peaking at #17 on the RPM Chart, and reaching #1 on CHUM 1050 in Toronto on October 2 that year. Their first three singles also made the local 1050 CHUM AM charts in Toronto.

Richard St. John Francis Harris was an Irish actor, singer-songwriter, theatrical producer, film director and writer. He appeared on stage and in many films, and is perhaps best known for his roles as King Arthur in Camelot (1967), as Oliver Cromwell in Cromwell (1970) and as Albus Dumbledore in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (2001) and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002), his final film. He also played a British aristocrat and prisoner in A Man Called Horse (1970), Emperor Marcus Aurelius in Gladiator (2000) and the gunfighter English Bob in Clint Eastwood's Western film Unforgiven (1992). Harris had a top ten hit in Britain and the US with his 1968 recording of Jimmy Webb's song "MacArthur Park". A Tramp Shining is an album by Harris, released in 1968. Harris teamed with singer-songwriter Jimmy Webb for this album. Although Harris sang many numbers on the soundtrack album to the film musical Camelot in the previous year, A Tramp Shining became his first solo album. Jimmy Webb wrote all the songs, arranged the musicians, and produced the entire album. "MacArthur Park" was one of the biggest singles of that year, reaching #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the United States. The album as a whole was also highly successful, and was nominated for a Grammy Award for "Album of the Year" in 1969.

From one perspective you can argue that the Yardbirds are one of the most unstable British rock groups of all time, reflected by the fact that it produced three of the greatest guitarists in history: Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, and Jimmy Page. It is mostly because all three started out with the Yardbirds that the group is regarded so highly even though they only had a few Top 40 hits in 1965-1966. This is a modern compilation of their early era.

01 - For Your Love
02 - Heart Full Of Soul
03 - Shapes Of Things
04 - You're A Better Man Than I
05 - Evil Hearted You
06 - The Train Kept A-Rollin'
07 - I Ain't Got You
08 - I Wish You Would
09 - Smokestack Lightning
