The Upside Dawne are an obscure psychedelic band from the 60's and this self-titled album is very rare release on the Audio Label of Lawrence, Kansas. The Illusions morphed into the Upside Dawne when Mike Jordan (lead guitar) and Bob Basow (vocal, sax) in the Illusions graduated from KU.  Steve Hall (drums) knew Jim Stringer (lead guitar), who knew Larry Franklin (rhythm guiter) and Tom Burdine (bass), so that's how they came to join the group. When Jim Stringer and Steve Hall left to form Tide, the Upside Dawne expanded into a 7-piece group with Scott Korchak, Garth Fundis and Dana Elniff on horns and vocals.

Vocalist Michelle Cochrane, singer/keyboardist Robb Royer, bassist Tim Hallinan, and drummer Steve Cohn formed harmony pop quartet The Pleasure Fair in Los Angeles in 1966. The group signed to Uni Records the following year, and on the recommendation of session ace Leon Russell, pop maestro David Gates was installed to produce their self-titled debut LP, headlined by the single "Morning Glory Days." "(I'm Gonna Have To) Let You Go" followed in 1968, and the Pleasure Fair soon dissolved; Gates then recruited Royer to join his fledgling soft pop group Bread, and the rest is AM radio history -- Hallinan is also among the musicians credited on the first Bread album, and later enjoyed a career as a mystery novelist. Surfin' USA is the second album released by The Beach Boys and was released in early 1963. This was the group's second album to be credited with production from Capitol's Nick Venet, Capitol Records' representative for Artists and Repertoire. Surfin' USA reached #2 in the US, lasting 78 weeks on the albums chart. It reached #17 in the UK in late 1965. Surfin' USA is notable for giving The Beach Boys their first widespread success with its title track, and for Brian Wilson's increasing prowess in songwriting, as well as vocal arrangement. The fuller-sounding vocals were achieved using double tracking, creating The Beach Boys' own unique sound.

A Quick One is the second album by English rock band The Who, released in 1966. American record company executives at Decca Records released the album under the title Happy Jack, rather than the sexually suggestive title of the UK release, and due to "Happy Jack" being a top forty hit in the U.S. "Happy Jack" was not included on the UK version of the album, but instead was released as a non-album single. This is widely regarded by fans to have been a pivotal album for the group, due to the departure from the R&B / pop formula featured on the band's first release. Part of the marketing push for the album was a requirement that each band member should write at least two of the songs on it (although Roger Daltrey only wrote one), so this Who album is the least dominated by Pete Townshend's writing. Bonus tracks in this album (11-20) are from de 1995 extended CD release.

Younger Than Yesterday is the fourth album by the American rock band The Byrds and was released in February 1967 on Columbia Records. The album saw the band continuing to integrate elements of psychedelic rock into their music, a process they had begun on their previous LP. In addition, the album captured the band experimenting with new musical textures, including brass instruments and reverse tape effects. It also marked the emergence of the band's bass player, Chris Hillman, as the group's third songwriter. Two of Hillman's compositions on Younger Than Yesterday exhibited country and western influences and thus, can be seen as early indicators of the country rock direction the band would pursue on their later albums. The title of Younger Than Yesterday is derived from the lyrics of "My Back Pages", a song written by Bob Dylan which was covered on the album. Younger Than Yesterday peaked at #24 on the Billboard Top LPs chart and reached #37 on the UK Albums Chart.

The Lemon Fog were a Houston-based quintet that had the distinction of being the first rock act signed to Ray McGinnis' Orbit Records label. They started out in the spring of 1963 as The Bar Eights, formed by Fillmore High School classmates Danny Ogg and Terry Horde, with Timmy Thorpe on bass, and Dale VanDeloo on saxophone and vocals. They were a Rip Chords-type surf band, with a few pop-soul numbers mixed into their sets. The group got a few coffee bar gigs and a sock hop to two to play before they broke up when VanDeloo supposedly attacked Ogg with a mike stand during an argument. Enter Chris Lyons, who was recruiting musicians at Clem's Music in Houston for a new band he was forming. Danny Ogg showed up at the store, and Lyons asked him to join--Ogg agreed on condition that Timmy Thorpe, who had just gotten laid off from work, play bass. Lyons agreed, and by that weekend, The Pla-Boys, as they were known, were playing their first gig, at St. Regis College for the Arts. In 1965, they went from being The Pla-Boys to The Lemon Fog, who quickly became recognized as one of the more formidable bands in Houston.(MZA)

My Generation is the debut album by the English rock band The Who, released by Brunswick Records in the United Kingdom in December 1965. It was released in the United States by Decca Records in April 1966 as The Who Sings My Generation with a different cover and a slightly different track listing. The album was made immediately after The Who got their first singles on the charts and according to the booklet in the Deluxe Edition, it was later dismissed by the band as something of a rush job that did not accurately represent their stage performance of the time. On the other hand, critics often rate it as one of the best rock albums of all time: in 2003, the album was ranked number 236 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time, and named the second greatest guitar album of all time by Mojo magazine. In 2004, it was #18 in Q magazine's list of the 50 Best British Albums Ever. In 2006, it was ranked #49 in NME's list of the 100 Greatest British Albums. In 2004, the title track was #11 in Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest songs of all time.

James Gang were a rock band formed in Cleveland, Ohio in 1967. Though the band was not a huge commercial success, except in the Northeast Ohio area, the fame garnered by guitarist Joe Walsh has since made the group more notable. The original band members were drummer Jim Fox, bassist Tom Kriss, guitarist Ronnie Silverman, keyboardist Phil Giallombardo, and guitarist Greg Grandillo, who was quickly replaced by Dennis Chandler. Bill Jeric replaced Silverman when he entered the service. After Chandler left, the group featured Glen Schwartz. However, none of the early line-ups released any material. In January 1968, Joe Walsh replaced Schwartz after Schwartz had left the band the previous month to move to California, where he ended up forming Pacific Gas & Electric. The band continued as a five piece for a short time until Giallombardo left to become involved in other pursuits. Jeric and Walsh worked together on guitar parts, but Jeric ended up leaving as well in the spring of 1968. He was then replaced by Ronnie Silverman, who had been discharged from the service. Passin' Thru is the fourth studio album by the band, released in 1972. This was the first album after guitarist and vocalist Joe Walsh left and was replaced by the singer Roy Kenner and guitarist Domenic Troiano, who left the band after Straight Shooter and was replaced with ex-Zephyr guitarist Tommy Bolin, who helped revitalize the band.

White Witch was a glam rock/psychedelic/hard rock band from Tampa, Florida that made two albums with Capricorn Records in the early 1970s. Their name was a paean to "white magic", contrary to the "black magic" of groups like Black Sabbath. As the band announced before their shows: "To bring good where there once was evil, to bring love where there once was hate, to bring wisdom where there once was ignorance; this is the power of White Witch".The group was inducted into the Florida Musicians Hall of Fame's Florida Music Honor Roll. The Holy Modal Rounders were an American folk music duo from the Lower East Side of New York City which started in the early 1960s, consisting of Peter Stampfel and Steve Weber. Their unique blend of folk music revival and psychedelia gave them a cult-like following from the late 1960s into the 1970s. For a time the band also featured prolific and famous playwright and actor, Sam Shepard. The fourth album, The Moray Eels Eat The Holy Modal Rounders, recorded in 1968, included "Bird Song". Symphonic Slam was mainly about Timo Laine (born in Finland, and moved to America as a child), and his polyphonic guitar synthesizer. The rest of the band was filled out by drummer John Lowery, and keyboardist David Stone. Timo had been playing the club circuit for a while, but it wasn't until he relocated to Canada that things began to happen. It was there that Symphonic Slam was discovered by A&M Records. What set them apart was the $10,000 360 systems guitar synthesizer prototype. This led to the release of their 1976 self-titled album.

Of all the zillions of CSNY-inspired westcoast hippie rock LPs from the early 1970s, this is one of the very best. Another feather in the cap for the great Columbia Canada office, with an excellent production bringing out the max from these talented longhairs. Clearly out of a "Deja Vu" corner (minus the sugary Nash crap, naturally), the songwriting here is very good, grabbing your attention without being overly commercial, while the band lays down a groove that is both relaxed and tight. You can hear early AOR moves creeping into the hippie stylings, and much like on Homer this is not a disadvantage but helps broaden the album's impact. Female vocalist Franki Hart of Freedom North handles a few tracks, but is given solid competition by the male vocalists who sing just as well. Soaring, lyrical guitar leads recur throughout the LP, and there are some vague prog moves with flute on one track. Clocking in at 42 minutes,  this could have omitted 1-2 tracks, and it's a testament to Riverson's strength that the playtime seems warranted. Recommended to anyone with an ear for top-level, upscale 70s westcoast sounds. [PL]
